Always the pioneer, Genya formed Goldie and the Gingerbreads in the early sixties, touring behind a string of European hits with the Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds and Hollies as the first all female rock and roll band. Later she resurfaced back in the US as the powerful voice of Ten Wheel Drive, one of the original horn jazz-fusion bands. In the Seventies she expanded her repertoire becoming the world's first independent female producer, with critically acclaimed records by Ronnie Spector and the Dead Boys, 'Young Loud and Snotty', labelled the ultimate punk album by many reviewers. During the same period Hilly Krystal summoned Genya to head up CBGB Records. In 2003 she received accolades for her memoir, Lollipop Lounge, one of the great tales of Rock and Roll survival. In it she speaks candidly about her childhood as a holocaust survivor, a teenage immigrant growing up in the tenements of New York's lower East Side, her career and survival of both addiction and lung cancer. In 2011 The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum included Goldie and the Gingerbreads in their Women in Music exhibit. In 2012 her latest CD, the autobiographical, Cheesecake Girl, was released to rave reviews. She also appears on the posthumous Joey Ramona release, 'New York City', and a portion of her story is about to hit the big screen as Castle star, Stana Katic portrays her character in the new feature film, 'CBGBs' scheduled for a 2013 release. She continues to host two monthly radio shows for Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius/XM: 'Chicks and Broads' in which she covers the often forgotten music of female artists from the 50's to the present, as well as showcasing new and unsigned bands in 'Goldie's Garage'.

Contributions by Christina Baade, Candace Bailey, Paula J. Bishop, Maribeth Clark, Brittany Greening, Tammy Kernodle, Kendra Preston Leonard, April L. Prince, Travis D. Stimeling, and Kristen M. Turner For every star, there are hundreds of less-recognized women who contribute to musical communities, influencing their aesthetics and expanding opportunities available to women. Hidden Harmonies: Women and Music in Popular Entertainment focuses not on those whose names are best known nor most celebrated but on the women who had power in collective or subversive ways hidden from standard histories. Contributors to Hidden Harmonies reexamine primary sources using feminist and queer methodologies as well as critical race theory in order to overcome previous, biased readings. The scholarship that results from such reexaminations explores topics from songwriters to the music of the civil rights movement and from whistling schools to musical influencers. These wide-ranging essays create a diverse and novel view of women's contribution to music and its production. With intelligence and care, Hidden Harmonies uncovers the fascinating figures behind decades of popular music.

Thomas Pynchon's fiction has been considered masculinist, misogynist, phallocentric, and pornographic: its formal experimentation, irony, and ambiguity have been taken both to complicate such judgments and to be parts of the problem. To the present day, deep critical divisions persist as to whether Pynchon's representations of women are sexist, feminist, or reflective of a more general misanthropy, whether his writing of sex is boorishly pornographic or effectually transgressive, whether queer identities are celebrated or mocked, and whether his departures from realist convention express masculinist elitism or critique the gendering of genre. Thomas Pynchon, Sex, and Gender reframes these debates. As the first book-length investigation of Pynchon's writing to put the topics of sex and gender at its core, it moves beyond binary debates about whether to see Pynchon as liberatory or conservative, instead examining how his preoccupation with sex and gender conditions his fiction's whole worldview. The essays it contains, which cumulatively address all of Pynchon's novels from V. (1963) to Bleeding Edge (2013), investigate such topics as the imbrication of gender and power, sexual abuse and the writing of sex, the gendering of violence, and the shifting representation of the family. Providing a wealth of new approaches to the centrality of sex and gender in Pynchon's work, the collection opens up new avenues for Pynchon studies as a whole.

Selena is living the dream on her terms—carefree and sloppy and all in the pursuit of pleasure. When a careless act of petty theft puts her in the crosshairs of a violent crime syndicate, her choices are clear—either curl up and die, or tear down the whole damned organization one bloody shotgun blast at a time. Nothing will satisfy her but savage retribution. Nothing can stop her. Get ready. Praise for SELENA: “Greg Barth cooked up something mean and served it up and I hope none of you choke on it because it’s mighty tasty.” —Eryk Pruitt, author of Hashtag and Dirtbags “It’s like the wildest of the men’s adventure novels of the ’70s, updated for the new millennium. Definitely not for the faint of heart.” —Bill Crider “Reminiscent of Larry Brown’s Fay, but less innocent and more violent, Selena combines fine writing and an indelible character to help fill the gap of female protagonists in the world of noir.” —Vicki Hendricks, author of Miami Purity “Greg Barth writes with a knife-like edge…A fast, crazy read.” —Marietta Miles, author of Route 12 “This book had me turning pages and gritting my teeth…a total punch to the gut, and it hurts so good.” —S.W. Lauden, author of Crosswise “Selena is a visceral pulp thriller that had me gripped from the outset.” —Tom Leins, of Dirty Books Blog “Greg Barth writes a hell of a book. He steps on the gas and doesn’t let up for a second.” —Michael Finamore “This series is a literary legend in the making” —Will Viharo, author of Love Stories Are Too Violent For Me “Selena is a tour de force of unapologetic sex and violence, not for the faint of heart but definitely for hardcore fans of fast paced, unrelenting pulp-noir in the fashion of nobody except Greg Barth.” —Shane D. Keene “Greg Barth writes well—hard charging and fast paced.” —Tony Knighton, author of Three Hours Past Midnight

Vollmer’s a young guy, grows up on ugly streets. He survives by being uglier, hurting people for money, hurting people because he likes hurting people. When he’s hired to track down Dust and bring back the money he stole, keeping Dust alive isn’t a priority. Neither is keeping anyone else alive, even people he loves. Vollmer’s killed people he loves before. With the Right Enemies is the bullet-drenched follow-up to Uncle Dust, Rob Pierce’s acclaimed debut novel about a bank robber’s disastrous fling with domestic life. Praise for WITH THE RIGHT ENEMIES: “A detailed and empathetic portrait of a personal struggle with demons we may not all face directly, but which always lurk beneath our carefully calculated covers. Pierce rips off that lid and exposes the common darkness of all our souls, whether we want to admit it or not.” —Will Viharo, author of Hard-Boiled Heart and Love Stories Are Too Violent For Me “One of the best noir and crime novels of the past five years. Pierce has done a masterful job of playing high drama and low stakes where the heart of the story isn’t about the big heist, or the big show down, or the fight scenes, but of the complicated nature of being a criminal, and a creature of violence, but not a simple caricature. A fantastic read for fans of cynical, dark, and yet hopeful tales of people who pay for their mistakes and have to keep the change.” —Jason Ridler, author of A Triumph For Sakura and Blood and Sawdust

Johannesburg is severely underrated as a tourist destination. This could be because it has no beaches, no snow-capped mountains, and no ancient buildings. But Johannesburg has something else - it is a cultural and industrial centre, with an enormous array of entertainment events running day and night. Johannesburg is also the scene of the fall of the abominable Apartheid system. So Johannesburg is not only a cultural centre, but it is also politically one of the most significant cities in Africa, and the most economically powerful. Furthermore, the human race evolved in the Johannesburg area. So there are many reasons to visit. This book gives an introduction to South Africa and Johannesburg in particular. It covers all the things to see and visit in Johannesburg and its surrounds. It provides addresses, phone numbers and GPS coordinates of each tourist attraction, so that you can find them easily. This edition contains a black-and-white interior to make the book affordable.
