Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have searched for flavor changing neutral currents and lepton family number violations in D[sup 0] meson decays. The upper limits on the branching fractions for D[sup 0][yields][ell][sup+][ell][sup -] and D[sup 0][yields] X[sup 0][ell][sup+][ell][sup -] are in the range 10[sup -5] to 10[sup -4], where X[sup 0] can be a[pi][sup 0], K[sub s][sup 0], [eta], [rho][sup 0], [omega], [bar K]*[sup 0], or[phi] meson, and the[ell][sup+][ell][sup -] pair can be e[sup+]e[sup -], [mu][sup+][mu][sup -], or e[sup[+-]][mu][sup[-+]]. Although these limits are above the theoretical predictions, most are new or an order of magnitude lower than previous limits.

Neutral current interactions are known from studies of K meson decays to conserve flavor to a high precision. Although flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are forbidden in the Weinberg-Salam model, many extensions of the Standard Model allow such processes. We present preliminary upper limits on FCNC-mediated decays of charmed particles, namely D° .-->. ee−, D° .-->. .mu.mu.−, D° .-->. .mu.e and D+ .-->. .pi.+.mu.e.

The latest results from a number of experiments on searches for rare decays of the charmed D-mesons are summarized. This talk reports on upper limits on flavor changing weak neutral current reactions and on processes that do not conserve the lepton family number.

We study the flavor-changing-neutral-current process c → u??− using 1.3 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We see clear indications of the D+{sub s} and D+ →??+ →?+?−?+ final states with significance greater than four standard deviations above background for the D+ state. We search for the continuum decay of D+ →?+?+?− in the dimuon invariant mass spectrum away from the? resonance. We see no evidence of signal above background and set a limit of B(D+ →?+?+?−)

The authors summarize the results of two recent searches for flavor-changing neutral current, lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D[sup+], D[sub s][sup+], and D[sup 0] mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, they examined D[sup+] and D[sub s][sup+][pi][ell][ell] and[Kappa][ell][ell] decay modes and the D[sup 0] dilepton decay modes containing either[ell][sup+][ell][sup[minus]], a[rho][sup 0], [bar[Kappa]]*[sup 0], or[phi] vector meson, or a non-resonant[pi][pi], [Kappa][pi], or[Kappa][Kappa] pair of pseudoscalar mesons. No evidence for any of these decays was found. Therefore, the authors presented branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 51 decay modes examined. Twenty-six of these modes had no previously reported limits, and eighteen of the remainder were reported with significant improvements over previously published results.

Partial differential equations form an essential part of the core mathematics syllabus for undergraduate scientists and engineers. The origins and applications of such equations occur in a variety of different fields, ranging from fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, heat conduction and diffusion, to quantum mechanics, wave propagation and general relativity. This volume introduces the important methods used in the solution of partial differential equations. Written primarily for second-year and final-year students taking physics and engineering courses, it will also be of value to mathematicians studying mathematical methods as part of their course. The text, which assumes only that the reader has followed a good basic first-year ancillary mathematics course, is self-contained and is an unabridged republication of the third edition published by Longman in 1985.

We report the results of a blind search for flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC), lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D, D{sub s}, and D° mesons (and their antiparticles) into 2-, 3-, and 4-body states including a lepton pair. Such decays may involve Flavor-Changing Neutral Currents, Leptoquarks, Horizontal Gauge Bosons, or Majorana Neutrinos. No evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, we present 90% confidence level branching-fraction upper limits, typically at the 10−4 level. A total of 51 decay channels have been examined; 26 have not been previously reported and 18 are significant improvements over previous results.
