DOWNLOAD EBOOKSince the development of the laser in the early 1960's, light scattering has played an increasingly crucial role in the investigation of many types of phase transitions and the published work in this field is now widely dispersed in a large number of books and journals.A comprehensive overview of contemporary theoretical and experimental research in this field is presented here. The reviews are written by authors who have actively contributed to the developments that have taken place in both Eastern and Western countries.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKLiquid crystals are known for their fascinating optical properties. This work describes the experiments on light scattering and theoretical calculations on nonlinear optics in liquid crystals. Light scattering is a powerful tool to study the viscoelastic response of liquid crystals which is an essential parameter for display industry. Both thermotropic and lyotropic systems were probed by light scattering. Thermal nonlinearities in cholesteric liquid crystals are described in this book and various surprising liquid crystal phase transitions in the presence of a laser beam are reported. The work described in the book is based on Ph.D. work carried out by Amit K Agarwal at the Raman Research Institute, India and all intellectual and other legal rights arising out of this work are owned by the Institute and they are acknowledged and protected.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWith their helical structure, cholesteric liquid crystals figure prominently in liquid crystal science. The selective reflection of light is their flagship property, and they offer a myriad of applications as advanced optical materials with multiscale properties. The cholesteric structure is also a ubiquitous design in the animal and plant kingdoms. This book contains eight contributions on fundamental investigations about defects, textures and structures of cholesteric materials, and experimental studies aimed at applications such as temperature sensors, head-up displays for improving automobile driving safety, or smart windows.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKLiquid crystals allow us to perform experiments that provide insight into fundamental problems of modern physics, such as phase transitions, frustration, elasticity, hydrodynamics, defects, growth phenomena, and optics. Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments is a result of personal research and of the graduate lectures given by the authors at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Paris VII, respectively. The book examines lamellar (smectic) and columnar liquid crystals, which, in addition to orientational order, possess 1D, 2D or 3D positional order. This volume illustrates original physical concepts using methodically numerous experiments, theoretical developments, and diagrams. Topics include rheology and plasticity, ferroelectricity, analogies with superconductors, hexatic order and 2D-melting, equilibrium shapes, facetting, and the Mullins-Sekerka instability, as well as phase transitions in free films and membrane vibrations. Nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals are covered by the authors in a separate volume entitled Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments. Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals is an ideal introduction and a valuable source of reference for theoretical and experimental studies of advanced students and researchers in liquid crystals, condensed matter physics, and materials science.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume contains papers presented at the Second Symposium on Ordered Fluids and Liquid Crystals held at the 158th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, New York, Sep tember, 1969. The Symposium was sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry. The proceedings for the first symposium on this subject were published by the American Chemical Society in the Advances in Chemistry Series. In the preface to the volume for the first meet ing held four years ago, we noted that research on liquid crystals had gone through tremendous fluctuations, with peaks of activity around 1900 and again in the early 1930's. The present period of high activity which started about 1960 has continued to exhibit acceleration. The reason for the persistent growth in the field is due to the increasing recognition of the important role played by liquid crystals in both biological systems and in items of commerce as diverse as detergents and electronic components. Addi tionally, more powerful and sophisticated instrumentation is pro viding a basis for understanding the properties of the liquid crystalline state as weIl as yielding inc~s~ve tests for the theories of mesophase structure which are only now reaching astate of maturity. DOWNLOAD EBOOKA total of 16 papers have appeared in the literature dealing with both the theoretical and experimental (light scattering) investigation of phase transitions and critical phenomena in simple molecular solids. New Brillouin scattering data have been obtained for benzil single crystals near the phase transition at 83.5K. A mean field approach to the dynamics of structural phase transitions in molecular crystals has been developed. Brillouin scattering study of the successive phase transitions in methmmonium iron chloride. In addition to the magnetic transition at lwo temperature, this system also possesses successive structural phase transitions. These have been studied by means of lattice dynamics and far infrared spectroscopy, birefringenence, x-ray and neutron diffraction, specific heat and ultrasonic sound velocity measurements, and ultrasonic attentuation measurements. Also pursued were high pressure Raman, Brillouin, and Rayleigh scattering studies of benzene in a diamond anvil cell.
