Excerpt from Letters From France and Italy The establishment and continuance of peace between Great Britain and the Continental nations, has opened an intercourse so free between their respective people, that the customs and curiosities of France and Italy are almost as familiar to our minds, as the customs and curiosities of our native land. Thither the Artist hastens for the cultivation of his taste, or the examination of those models, which the superior skill of by-gone ages has bequeathed to their posterity. Thither the Antiquarian bends his steps, that he may sit with admiring contemplation, beside the vestiges of antiquity. Thither the Naturalist wanders to explore that loveliness which Nature unfolds beneath a softer sky, and more genial climate. Excerpt from Letters From Abroad A few miles from the former place, we passed a picturesque gorge, which forms the present frontier between France and Italy. Characteristic differences soon appear, not in the country, as I have said, but in the prevalence of the Italian language in the notices on the walls and the names of the shops. The French authorities are doing all they can to banish the Italian from the annexed provinces. They will allow the celperz'ezcm, for instance, a license to sell Protestant bibles in French, but not in Italian. Excerpt from Across the Atlantic: Letters From France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and England Slipped a little profusely into these letters; and I feel a misgiving that there are those who will attribute ulterior motives to this circumstance, or at least charge me with egotism. But, indeed, they are mis taken; for the dear knows there is nothing about me to warrant or cultivate such a feeling. It was SO natural and thoughtless to mix these items with the rest, that if it was an error, I sincerely hope to be forgiven. After all, there is nothing that the shoe maker understands so well as leather; and I would rather hear him talk leather all day, than a brief period of things that he knows nothing about. Some times an Observation has gone forth that, on subse quent reflection, I would have scratched out; but when the relentless mail authorities once have these matters in hand, there remains no alternative but to telegraph; and at a hundred dollars a line, this manner of sober second thinking becomes rather an extravagant recreation. So, upon the whole, I have let things go as people get married for better or worse. Should I at any time have made allusions at which any person could take umbrage, I want it distinctly understood that it was always in a Pick wickiau sense, and as free from malice as the genial heart Of that distinguished individual. And now let me add, supposing this to be the end of my last letter from Europe, that no child ever looked forward toxxxn apology. Excerpt from Letters on the War: Between Germany and France Do you know what it is that people here are afraid Of Some of our Politicians, to whom I do not belong, profess to believe in the existence of a plot of long standing between the Cabinets of Paris and Florence. They think that just as France has been forced into a war against us, SO it will be with Italy, unless Italian citizens prove themselves to be stronger and wiser than the French have done. And do you know what the friends of Italy reply to his Sf Translated from the Italian by I. C. They say, AS for the Italian Cabinet, anything is possible; but as for the Italian people, they will sup port the Germans, and offer an invincible obstacle to any such policy. Still, to say the truth, we are not entirely safe. It is only too easy to deceive a people; and I do not feel convinced that your countrymen recognize the serious ness of this impending danger, or that they are on the alert in looking out for it. Excerpt from Letters of an Architect, From France, Italy, and Greece, Vol. 1 of 2 Some persons may deem an apology necessary for the positive tone which the author has adopted in mere matters of Opinion. He had in fact, at first, frequently introduced the expressions, I think, It seems to me, and others similar. The reflection that what ever he could say on such subjects, was necessarily the mere ex pression of his own sentiments, has ultimately induced him to. The translator regrets that they could not have been published in the original French, but for various reasons it was deemed best to translate them; and it is with the hope that they will interest others in their bits of local color that she now offers them to the public.
