This is part of a series of books based on the NCERT syllabus and research on the teaching of mathematics for class 3. This is part of a revised series of books on mathematics for class 3 in India earlier published on www.vidyaonline.net. The focus here is on an understanding of concepts and procedures necessary for further learning and problem solving. The concepts are presented by videos, manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols. Exercises are provided for translation from one mode to another, reasoning, communication, and applications to real-life and problem solving. Automaticity (answering without thinking) of addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division facts are emphasized. The teachers should provide more practice if necessary for mastery of number facts and procedures. The schools that can afford should provide manipulatives such as counters, geometrical models, tangram pieces, blocks, geoboards, dot papers, balances, scissors. In schools with a paucity of resources teachers and/or students can make models. Children can bring from home sticks, small boxes, pipes, scissors. Exercises with manipulatives and oral work are included to facilitate the teacher’s work. Answers to selected exercises are provided.

This is part of a revised series of books based on research on the teaching of mathematics for class 4 in India earlier published on www.vidyaonline.net. This covers the NCERT syllabus for class 4. The focus here is on laying a foundation for further learning of mathematics and understanding of concepts and procedures. Concepts are presented by videos, manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols. Automaticity (answering without thinking) of multiplication and division facts are emphasized. The teachers should provide more practice if necessary for mastery of the concepts, and procedures and use situations for exercises that are familiar to the children in the class. Ample opportunities are provided for applications of mathematics to real-world situations, reasoning, communication, and problem solving. The schools that can afford should provide concrete manipulatives such as counters, geometrical models, tangram pieces, blocks, geoboards, balances, fraction pieces, graphs, scissors, ropes. The schools that cannot afford teachers and/or students can make some of these and improvise for others. For example, they can make tangram pieces, 3-D models, balance, use dot paper for Geoboard, draw small circles for counters, use fraction chart for fraction pieces. Some activity sheets are provided that can be removed and used. Answers to selected exercises are provided.

This is the second of a series of books based on the NCERT syllabus and research on the teaching of mathematics. The focus here is on an understanding of concepts and procedures. The concepts and procedures are presented by manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols and videos that enhance their learning. Opportunities are provided for communication, translation from one mode to another, and applications to daily life. The teachers should use manipulatives that are commercially available or can be made and use situations for exercises that are familiar to the children in the class. As most of the schools in India have a paucity of resources, we will use sticks for activities with number concepts. The sticks can be replaced by an abacus or base ten blocks. The schools that can afford should provide materials such as counters, Al abacus, pattern blocks, geometrical models, geoboards, fake money, and use these for explaining concepts and procedures. If the schools/students cannot afford these, teachers can make models of different 2-D and 3–D shapes using cardboard and use dot paper instead of Geoboard. The students can be asked to bring buttons, scissors, and empty boxes, containers of different shapes and sizes from home. All children should at least have 100 sticks of the same length and rubber bands(they can buy pop sticks or toothpicks) and dot paper. As for most teachers, the textbook is the curriculum. This book is a teaching guide cum workbook for students. As the children have not yet developed the reading skills, the concepts, operations and word problems should be learnt and tested orally first. The exercises with manipulatives and oral work are included to facilitate that. Some activity sheets are also provided that can be printed and used by students.

Selected as the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics winter book club book! Rich tasks, collaborative work, number talks, problem-based learning, direct instruction...with so many possible approaches, how do we know which ones work the best? In Visible Learning for Mathematics, six acclaimed educators assert it’s not about which one—it’s about when—and show you how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school. That’s a high bar, but with the amazing K-12 framework here, you choose the right approach at the right time, depending upon where learners are within three phases of learning: surface, deep, and transfer. This results in "visible" learning because the effect is tangible. The framework is forged out of current research in mathematics combined with John Hattie’s synthesis of more than 15 years of education research involving 300 million students. Chapter by chapter, and equipped with video clips, planning tools, rubrics, and templates, you get the inside track on which instructional strategies to use at each phase of the learning cycle: Surface learning phase: When—through carefully constructed experiences—students explore new concepts and make connections to procedural skills and vocabulary that give shape to developing conceptual understandings. Deep learning phase: When—through the solving of rich high-cognitive tasks and rigorous discussion—students make connections among conceptual ideas, form mathematical generalizations, and apply and practice procedural skills with fluency. Transfer phase: When students can independently think through more complex mathematics, and can plan, investigate, and elaborate as they apply what they know to new mathematical situations. To equip students for higher-level mathematics learning, we have to be clear about where students are, where they need to go, and what it looks like when they get there. Visible Learning for Math brings about powerful, precision teaching for K-12 through intentionally designed guided, collaborative, and independent learning.

This is the first of a series of books based on the NCERT syllabus and research on the teaching of mathematics. As in India, most schools do not have Kindergarten. This book is based on the syllabus for both classes. The teacher in the schools that have kindergarten can decide what to cover in kindergarten and class 1. Teachers in the schools that do not have kindergarten can go at a faster pace as the students there are older(5 years). The focus here is on an understanding of concepts and procedures. The concepts and procedures are presented by manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols and videos that enhance their learning. Opportunities are provided for communication, translation from one mode to another, and applications to daily life. The teachers should use manipulatives that are available or can be made and use situations for exercises that are familiar to the children in the class. As the schools in developing countries have a paucity of resources, we will use sticks for activities with number concepts. The sticks can be replaced by abacus or unifix cubes. The schools that can afford should provide materials such as counters, unifix cubes, pattern blocks, geometrical models, geoboards, fake money, and use these for explaining concepts and procedures. Or teachers can make models of different 2-D and 3–D shapes using cardboard and use dot paper instead of Geoboard. The students can be asked to bring buttons, scissors, and empty boxes, containers of different shapes and sizes from home.
