This conference was organised by the Third World Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency. For the 250 female scientist participants from distant lands and diverse cultures from the Caribbean to the Far East, the conference proved a stimulating experience to recognize their strength in terms of numbers and achievements, to forge new links, nationally and internationally, and to demonstrate that science is independent of gender and is no longer an exclusively male-dominated preserve. The first part of the proceedings deals with the global, Third World and national perspectives of the theme “Women and Science” and the second highlights the scientific contributions by Third World women scientists, their personal experiences and scientific reports. The publication of these proceedings would serve as a potentially effective strategy aimed at enhancing the status of women scientists, not only in the Third World but worldwide.

For the past twenty years feminist grass-root movements, professionals, and researchers have shown how the social construction of gender relations interacts with all forms of imperialism to mould the dominant ideologies of development. Based on a constant dialogue between theory and practice, research and action, their analyses of society and international development begin with women's experience and aim at policies and actions directed toward social change and the empowerment of women.

Training of agriculture teachers and extension workers becomes more and more important as an ever growing number of farmers in developing countries have to master skills in order to generate income and improve their standards of living. Beginning with an overview of the relationship between literacy and agricultural extension, this book goes on to investigate the success of improving the quality of teaching and looks at case studies of more recent approaches to rural education for all members of the household.
