The importance of quality interpreting in legal and healthcare settings can never be stressed enough, when any mistake – no matter how small – can compromise the delivery of justice or put someone’s health at risk. This book addresses issues arising from interpreting in legal and healthcare settings by presenting cutting-edge research findings in interpreting and interpreter education in a number of countries around the world – including those which are relatively new to the field. It contains selected papers from a conference dedicated to such themes – the First International Conference on Legal and Healthcare Interpreting – as well as other invited papers related to the fields of legal and healthcare interpreting. This book is useful not only to scholars and educators, interpreters and translators working in legal or healthcare settings, but also to legal and healthcare professionals who work with interpreters in their day-to-day work, including judges, lawyers, police officers, doctors, midwives and nurses.

Lawyer jokes have been around since there have been lawyers. In fact, the very first lawyer to ever pass the bar was Mediocritus, who went on to invent the billable hour. People make jokes about lawyers for the same reason that dogs lick themselves because they can. Lawyers are easy targets because everyone in America has at one time either a) hired a lawyer, b) hated a lawyer, or c) has been a lawyer. No matter what your affiliation with the legal profession is, you will enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy it, hey, sue us.

Peters (“Pup”), the intrepid tort lawyers whose zany exploits delighted readers of Torts R Us, return with another round of legal shenanigans guaranteed to make you laugh until you cry. Their latest antics include a lawsuit against the Russian government for entrapping a well-known Congressman in a honey trap, attempting to liberate all the chimpanzees in the Bronx Zoo, and representing the unforgettable Lydia Lowlace in lawsuits against unscrupulous strip club owners and video game makers who have taken advantage of her sudden fame. The brothers even concoct a plan to revitalize Connecticut’s three poorest cities by turning them into a mecca for nationwide tort lawsuits. Settle into your favorite chair to make sure you don’t fall on the floor laughing at the latest exploits of these lovable lawyers who will stop at nothing in their pursuit of publicity, fame, fun and money. Critics Lavish Praise on PLEASE PASS THE TORTS “Coming on the heels of the hilarious, laugh-out-loud farce TORTS R US, its sequel PLEASE PASS THE TORTS firmly establishes Morrison as the finest writer of humorous fiction since Chaucer. I haven’t laughed so hard since that lady on my show said she thought it was General Lee who was buried in Grant’s Tomb.” - Graucho Marx “Having laughed my way though PLEASE PASS THE TORTS, I can only ask: Where was Peters and Peters when I needed them during the Cold War? Their solution to Russian spying and dirty tricks is truly awe inspiring. The CIA could have saved tons of money and endless lives if we had just called on the Peters Brothers to solve our problem with the Russkies. – Allen Dulles “PLEASE PASS THE TORTS is a worthy successor to Morrison’s earlier work, TORTS R US. That book had me laughing hysterically from the first page to the last. It is by far the wittiest work in the English language since I wrote The Importance of Being Earnest.” - Oscar Wilde “Having laughed my way through TORTS R US and now PLEASE PASS THE TORTS, I can only say that Morrison’s outrageous humor shines through on every page. I especially enjoyed the sexual escapades of his characters. It made me nostalgic for my days in the White House.” - Warren G. Harding

Book One: The Tycoon’s Pregnant Lover Romance novelist Brandy Jackson is not a one-night-stand kind of girl, but with Maximillian Benton, she’s willing to make an exception. Big mistake. Turns out, the charming, handsome man with a sexy British accent is a jerk who’s only interested in laying claim to Landon Castle, the inheritance Brandy received when her beloved grandmother died. When a judge orders them to both live at the castle until the legal matter is resolved, Brandy reluctantly agrees. As big as the castle is, it turns out to be too small for her and Max, who find themselves spending more and more time together. And even though Brandy knows Max isn’t her happily-ever-after, when the heat becomes too much she still gives in to her passion. Bigger mistake. Now she’s pregnant. Max’s motives for wanting the castle are simple: revenge. A billionaire software designer, Max was swindled by the man who owned the castle, and now it’s sweet payback owning the thing his nemesis loved most. Max tries, rather desperately, to ignore his attraction to Brandy and the way his heart expands whenever they’re together. Despite his cynicism about love, he can’t help wondering if Brandy might be different from all the other women he’s met. Happily ever after just isn’t for him. But he can’t shake the feeling he may have lost the best thing in his life… Book Two: The Tycoon’s Fake Fiancée Reclusive billionaire inventor Gavin Burrows still thinks about Sarah Hanson—the woman he had a brief but memorable fling with three years ago. So he’s shocked when the pretty American woman shows up at his castle door pleading with him to not end his contract with his gardeners, who happen to be Sarah’s aunt and uncle. Sarah is desperate to complete the garden, but Gavin is desperate, too. He’ll do almost anything to get his mother to stop playing matchmaker—even if that means making a deal with Sarah to pose as his fiancée. She gets her garden, he gets his mother off his back. At least with Sarah posing as his fake fiancée, he can avoid all his mother’s marriage prospects. Sarah would never tell Gavin this, but that summer three years ago? She’d fallen hard for him. As an only child, Sarah has always wanted a large family, so when she learns he considers having a big, loud family akin to having the plague, she now realizes Gavin is definitely not the man for her. Still, she can’t resist the opportunity to restore Gavin’s historic garden to its former glory, so when he offers, she reluctantly agrees to pose as his fiancée and prays she can shield her heart. When Gavin’s parents throw them an engagement party, the guilt over all their lies begins to weigh heavy—as does the realization she’ll once again be left heartbroken. Book Three: The Tycoon’s Convenient Bride To billionaire Anthony Charles Harrington V, everything is about business. Including marriage. All he needs is a society wife who will give him an heir and he’s completely prepared to marry a woman he doesn’t love or desire to secure his fifth-generation company’s future. Until he meets Diana Tinsley. She’s quirky and the kind of free spirit he’s looking to spend time with before he settles down. Using all his considerable charm, he convinces Diana to have a one-week fling, just a lark with no strings attached. But when Diana shows up at his door two months later, he realizes their “no-strings” affair will have long-term consequences: Diana is pregnant. Nothing could be more… perfect. He’ll get his heir, get his wife, and focus on his business. He just needs to get Diana to agree to a marriage of convenience. Diana is reluctant about the marriage idea at first. She can’t imagine giving up her job as a nurse to become a society wife, but eventually her practical side wins out. Her child will have a secure future and she’ll be able continue her life as usual. She doesn’t count on her attraction to Tony—which was already fierce—growing even hotter.

WELCOME TO A SWEET DELIGHT Heris Serrano was an officer from a family with a long tradition of distinguished service in the Fleet. So when a treacherous superior set her up and forced her to resign her commission, she thought life had lost all meaning. But she still needed to pay the bills¾which was how she ended up as "Captain" of a rich old lady's interstellar luxury yacht, the Sweet Delight, which just added insult to injury ... or so she thought. But Cecelia, the rich and exceedingly well-born old lady, turned out to have more brains than most admirals Heris had known, and when the pair ran into a secret society whose idea of "fun" was hunting and killing people, they quickly put a stop to that blood sport. But that was only the beginning. The heir to the throne himself was involved with the society, and Heris soon uncovered a plot against the royal family and a conspiracy within the Fleet itself. And whoever controlled the Fleet controlled the galaxy . . . Before it was all over, Heris would be given a chance to rejoin her beloved space navy ... if she could manage to stop an invading armada with only one destroyer, two PT boats, one ore scow, and¾oh, yes¾an old lady's space yacht Sweet Delight. Impossible Not for Heris Serrano. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "... dazzling ... As noted in the Preface to Volume 1 in this series, the goal of Perspectives in Law and Psychology is to provide a forum for books aimed at systemati cally interfacing the two disciplines. Toward this end, Volume 1 pre sented a collection of original writings focused on the criminal justice system that grew out of a conference held at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Because that volume was based on conference proceedings, however, an attempt was not made to provide thorough coverage of all law-psychology issues in the criminal justice system; rather, it highlight ed a select few issues that were currently being investigated by some of the outstanding people in the field. This volume differs substantially from the first in that it attempts to bring together those psycholegal scholars who are doing the major re search on the trial process today and provides broad coverage of critical research on the trial. Thus, the chapters not only provide an extensive review of existing literature in this field but also present new contribu tions by these scholars.
