DOWNLOAD EBOOKGreenhouse gas emissions by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through the wider use of existing best practices and technologies. FAO conducted a detailed analysis of GHG emissions at multiple stages of various livestock supply chains, including the production and transport of animal feed, on-farm energy use, emissions from animal digestion and manure decay, as well as the post-slaughter transport, refrigeration and packaging of animal products. This report represents the most comprehensive estimate made to-date of livestocks contribution to global warming as well as the sectors potential to help tackle the problem. This publication is aimed at professionals in food and agriculture as well as policy makers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Emergency Management Centre-Animal Health (EMC-AH) activity report reflects how through the core pillars of its strategic action plan: preparedness, response, incident coordination, collaboration and resource mobilization, EMC-AH contributed to strengthening resilience of livelihoods to animal health-related emergencies and zoonoses. The report addresses EMC-AH performance and actions for the twelve-month period of November 2020–October 2021 and illustrates EMC-AH’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Despite restrictions imposed due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, EMC-AH continued to effectively and rapidly support FAO divisions, country and regional offices, and international partners, to reduce the threat of animal diseases to food security, agricultural development, social stability and trade.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKMost of the 70 billion animals that are farmed in the world are transported at least once in their lives. For improved animal welfare, sustainability, and profitability it is important that everyone involved in the transportation process takes responsibility for doing a good job. This may require legislation and assurance schemes backed up by inspections and driven by consumer awareness and demand. All aspects of the transportation process, including preparation for transport, handling during loading and unloading, handler and driver training, stocking density on the transport container, journey length, and weather have an effect on animal welfare, meat quality, health after transport, and even mortality during transit. These topics are covered in the papers and reviews in this book together with related aspects such as consumer perceptions of animal transport, cleaning of transport coops, and consideration of on-farm slaughter to obviate the need for transport to an abattoir. The book adds to the knowledge of farm animal transport and highlights areas for future research and improved practice.

Beating the Odds in a Big Country captures the dynamism of the campaign and records the very real contribution in cash and kind made by the many producers whose herds were subject to eradication programs.
