This workshop is the fifth in a series devoted to the presentation and discussion of new findings in the field of noncrystalline solids such as amorphous and nanocrystalline materials, granular systems and fine particles, multiphase systems and thin films, polymers, and other disordered systems. The workshop is divided into six categories, with ten invited contributions.
This volume comprises a collection of invited and selected contributions presented at the 16th International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy in Palm Cove, Queensland, Australia, 13-18 July 2003. The 14th International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy brought together spectroscopists from all over the world working in the very diverse and still growing field of laser spectroscopy. Spanning the area from fundamental issues (such as experiments testing the foundations of quantum mechanics), to atomic and molecular spectroscopy, precision spectroscopy and matter wave optics to Bose-Einstein condensation, covering quantum optics and the new field of quantum computation and quantum information, up to nonlinear optics and ultrashort pulse spectroscopy, and medical applications of laser spectroscopy, the conference addressed a large number of modern scientific issues at the highest level.
The Eighth International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy (EICOLS '87) was held at the Sunwing Hotel in A.re, Sweden, June 22-26; 1987. Fol lowing the traditions ef its predecessors at Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, Rottach-Egern, Jasper Park, Interlaken and Maui the intent of EICOLS '87 was to provide a forum for active scientists to meet in an informal at mosphere to discuss recent developments in laser spectroscopy. The scenic and remote location of the conference venue greatly stimulated a lively and relaxed exchange of information and ideas. The conference was attended by 227 scientists from 20 countries includ ing Australia, Austria, Canada, the People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Repulic of Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, the Soviet Union, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The scientific program included 14 topical sessions with 50 invited talks, ranging in length from 20 to 40 minutes. About 70 additional in vited contributions were presented in two evening poster sessions. A third evening session included 4 oral and 18 poster post-deadline presentations.
The book includes all the recent major advances in the field of Laser Spectroscopy. Major results span from the control of matter by electromagnetic fields (trapping and coding) to high precision measurements on simple atomic systems and to quantum optics with single atoms. As an outstanding contribution, the reader will find in the book the first report of the Bose-Einstein condensation achieved by laser-cooling of rubidium atoms. Achievements in the technology of tunable sources, in particular of miniaturized solid state devices, are also reported. Most recent advances in molecular spectroscopy are illustrated with emphasis on 'cooled' spectra, clusters and high accuracy frequency references. Topics such as atomic interferometry and microcavity quantum optics are also covered.
The Fifth International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy or VICOLS, was held at Jasper Park Lodge, in Jasper, Canada, June 29 to July 3, 1981. Following the tradition of the previous conferences in Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, and Rottach-Egern, it was hoped that VICOLS would provide an opportunity for act ive scientists to meet in an informal atmosphere for discussions of recent developments and applications in laser spectroscopy. The excellent conference facilities and remote location of Jasper Park Lodge in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, amply fulfilled these expectations. The conference was truly international, with 230 scientists from 19 countries participating. The busy program of invited talks lasted four days, with two evening sessions, one a panel discussion on Rydberg state spectro scopy, the other a lively poster session of approximately 60 post-deadline papers. We wish to thank all of the participants for their outstanding contribu tions and for preparation of their papers, now available to a wider audience. Our thanks go to the members of the International Steering Committee for their suggestions and recommendations. We are especially pleased to have held this conference under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. The Seventh International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy or SEICOLS'85 was held at the Maui Surf Hotel, Hawaii, USA, June 24 to 28, 1985. Like its predecessors at Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, Rottach-Egern, Jasper Park, and Interlaken, SEICOLS '85 aimed at providing an informal setting for active scientists to meet and discuss recent developments and applications in laser spectroscopy. The Conference site on the sunny sands of famed Kaanapali Beach on the Island of Maui, although perhaps not the traditional mountain resort, offered nonetheless an atmosphere most inspiring to creative discussions during the unscheduled afternoons. The Conference was truly international: 223 scientists represented 19 countries, including Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France Germany (FRG), Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and U.S.A. The intense scientific program included 14 topical sessions with 59 invited talks. Approximately 60 additional invited papers and 16 postdeadline papers were presented during three lively evening poster sessions. The present Proceedings contain oral as well as poster and postdeadline papers. We thank all authors for the timely preparation of their manuscripts, now available to a wider audience. We would also like to thank the members of the International Steering Committee for their valuable suggestions and advice. Our special thanks go to the members of the Program Committee for their painstaking efforts.
The Fourth International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy (FICOLS) was held in the Hotel Oberfahrt in Rottach-Egern, Tegernsee, June 11-15, 1979. Rottach-Egern is a well-known health resort situated on the southern end of Lake Tegernsee. As with the previous laser spectroscopy conferences in Vail, Megeve, and Jackson, the purpose of FICOLS was to provide ~n informal setting where an international group of scientists active in laser spectroscopy could discuss current problems and developments in the field. The program consisted essen tially of invited lectures with appropriate time provided for the latest postdeadline results. The conference was attended by 340 scientists representing 25 countries: Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada,- Peoples Re public of China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany (FRG), Germany (GDR), Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Nether lands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.S.k,, U.S.S.R., and Yugoslavia. Unfortunately five of our colleagues from Japan who planned to attend the meeting could not come due to an interruption of airline schedules, Their absence was a distinct loss to the conference. However, their papers will be published in one of the forthcoming issues of the journal Applied Physics. Numerous people have contributed to making the conference a success. Especially we would like to thank the members of the steering committee for their advice concerning the program.
