For nearly two centuries, the relation between analytic functions of one complex variable, their boundary values, harmonic functions, and the theory of Fourier series has been one of the central topics of study in mathematics. The topic stands on its own, yet also provides very useful mathematical applications. This text provides a self-contained introduction to the corresponding questions in several complex variables: namely, analysis on the Heisenberg group and the study of the solutions of the boundary Cauchy-Riemann equations. In studying this material, readers are exposed to analysis in non-commutative compact and Lie groups, specifically the rotation group and the Heisenberg groups-both fundamental in the theory of group representations and physics. Introduced in a concrete setting are the main ideas of the Calderón-Zygmund-Stein school of harmonic analysis. Also considered in the book are some less conventional problems of harmonic and complex analysis, in particular, the Morera and Pompeiu problems for the Heisenberg group, which relates to questions in optics, tomography, and engineering. The book was borne of graduate courses and seminars held at the University of Maryland (College Park), the University of Toronto (ON), Georgetown University (Washington, DC), and the University of Georgia (Athens). Readers should have an advanced undergraduate understanding of Fourier analysis and complex analysis in one variable.

The interplay between analysis on Lie groups and the theory of special functions is well known. This monograph deals with the case of the Heisenberg group and the related expansions in terms of Hermite, special Hermite, and Laguerre functions. The main thrust of the book is to develop a concrete Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for these expansions and use the theory to prove multiplier theorems. The questions of almost-everywhere and mean convergence of Bochner-Riesz means are also treated. Most of the results in this monograph appear for the first time in book form.

Tables of Laguerre Polynomials and Functions contains the values of Laguerre polynomials and Laguerre functions for n = 2 , 3 , . . . , 7 ; s = 0(0.1) 1; x = 0(0.1) 10(0.2) 30, and the zeroes and coefficients of the polynomials for n = 2 (1) 10 and s = 0(0.05) 1. The book also explains the Laguerre polynomials, their properties, Laguerre functions, and the tabulation of the Laguerre polynomials and functions. The book contains three tables: tables of values of Laguerre polynomials and functions, tables of the coefficients of the polynomials, and tables of their roots. The first table consists of six parts arranged successively in the ascending order of the degree n. Researchers have calculated the tables for a wider range of values of the parameters n, s and x (n = 2(1) 10, s = 0(0.05) 1, x = 0(0.1) 10(0.2) 30(0.5) 80) using computers at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Technology of the Byelorussian Academy of Sciences and the Computer Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. Scientists and investigators at computer centers, research institutes, and engineering organizations will find the book highly valuable.

Integral Transforms and Their Applications, provides a systematic , comprehensive review of the properties of integral transforms and their applications to the solution of boundary and initial value problems. Over 750 worked examples, exercises, and applications illustrate how transform methods can be used to solve problems in applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. The specific applications discussed include problems in differential, integral, and difference equations; electric circuits and networks; vibrations and wave propagation; heat conduction; fractional derivatives and fractional integrals; dynamical systems; signal processing; quantum mechanics; atmosphere and ocean dynamics; physical chemistry; mathematical biology; and probability and statistics. Integral Transforms and Their Applications includes broad coverage the standard material on integral transforms and their applications, along with modern applications and examples of transform methods. It is both an ideal textbook for students and a sound reference for professionals interested in advanced study and research in the field.

The study of nonlinearities in physiology has been hindered by the lack of effective ways to obtain nonlinear dynamic models from stimulus-response data in a practical context. A considerable body of knowledge has accumulated over the last thirty years in this area of research. This book summarizes that progress, and details the most recent methodologies that offer practical solutions to this daunting problem. Implementation and application are discussed, and examples are provided using both synthetic and actual experimental data. This essential study of nonlinearities in physiology apprises researchers and students of the latest findings and techniques in the field.

The projective, Möbius, Laguerre, and Minkowski planes over the real numbers are just a few examples of a host of fundamental classical topological geometries on surfaces. This book summarizes all known major results and open problems related to these classical point-line geometries and their close (nonclassical) relatives. Topics covered include: classical geometries; methods for constructing nonclassical geometries; classifications and characterizations of geometries. This work is related to many other fields including interpolation theory, convexity, the theory of pseudoline arrangements, topology, the theory of Lie groups, and many more. The authors detail these connections, some of which are well-known, but many much less so. Acting both as a reference for experts and as an accessible introduction for graduate students, this book will interest anyone wishing to know more about point-line geometries and the way they interact.
