Volume XXI/2 of History of Universities contains the customary mix of learned articles, book reviews, conference reports, and bibliographical information, which makes this publication such an indispensable tool for the historian of higher education. The complex relationships between ethno-nationality, rights to land, and territorial sovereignty have long fed disputes over territorial control and landed rights between different nations, ethnicities, and religions. These disputes raise a number of interesting issues related to the nature of land regimes and to their economic and political implications. The studies drawn together in this key volume explore these and related issues for a broad variety of countries and times. They illuminate the diverse causes of ethno-national land disputes, and the different forms of adjustment and accommodation to the power differences between the contesting groups. This book contains the papers delivered at sessions organised by the Genealogy and Local History Section at the annual conferences of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) between 2001 and 2005; many of these are updated versions of the original presentations. A wide range of significant issues and trends in historical and family research is covered. The authors, all experts in their own fields, address those engaged in delivering genealogy and local history services in libraries, archives and museums across the world. Moreover, they focus on the growing army of enthusiasts directly engaged in tracing their own ancestral and local history. Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. Al hilo del tiempo recoge los artículos publicados por el autor en los últimos treinta años, estructurados en torno a sus dos principales preocupaciones historiográficas: las Cortes, en especial las del Reino de Valencia, y la burocracia de la España Imperial. La primera parte sitúa las Cortes valencianas en el contexto de la península ibérica y de los parlamentos europeos, y se explican los momentos y circunstancias que llevaron al País Valenciano a aceptar la propuesta de la Unión de Armas del Conde Duque de Olivares en las Cortes de 1626. La segunda parte analiza la función de los colegios mayores españoles como instituciones de mecenazgo para la educación de las elites burocráticas del imperio español y el papel que el Colegio español de Bolonia (Italia) juega en esa dinámica. En la parte final se apuntan temas poco conocidos de una España que todavía conservaba un imperio, como los intentos frustrados de crear una colonia penal española y los esfuerzos de Rafael Altamira en la creación del «americanismo» español. El autor nos invita, por último, a repensar, en base a la experiencia del pasado, la relación de los dos países ibéricos: España y Portugal.
This book analyzes both the Chilean state policies on commercial aviation and the corporate history of the state-owned airline Línea Aérea Nacional (LAN) between 1929 and 1989. The book covers a transition from the early adoption of policies that were nationalist, from both the national security and economic standpoints, through the complete deregulation of the skies and the sale of the state airline to foreign capital. Both processes were implemented by army officers (Carlos Ibáñez del Campo and Augusto Pinochet, respectively). It shows that LAN’s corporate development was marked by the construction of a national aviation paradigm that, albeit initially characterized by a clear definition of nationalism with the state as preeminent, was far from static over time. As from 1929, the role of the state airline, as both a transport service provider and an instrument of public policy, was subject to review. This was due in part to Chile’s political dynamics in the twentieth century in terms of matters such as the level of consensus/dissent about the development model and the role of the state, SOEs, and the private sector in the economy. It also reflected trends in the commercial airline industry globally, technological advances and, as from the 1970s, pressures to liberalize the sector.
THE SUBTITLE OF THIS SIXTH AND FINAL VOLUME of The Vincentians, “Internationalization and Aggiornamento (1919–1980),” describes the growth and change of the Congregation of the Mission in the twentieth century. Formerly European in focus, the provinces of the Congregation gained their own voice. Membership in mission lands, such as China, Brazil, and Ethiopia, surged, as local vocations joined their European confreres. The same is true of maturing provinces elsewhere. St. Vincent de Paul’s congregation became internationalized in both outreach and membership. The Vincentians in these recent decades also tasted the bitterness of persecution. The Congregation was suppressed at various times in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Its members often reacted by moving elsewhere, thus furthering the internationalization of the Vincentian charism. Under the Nazis and Communist regimes, many suffered imprisonment, torture, and death. The provinces of Central Europe (Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland), to say nothing of China, were particularly hard-hit. Updating (aggiornamento) was the watchword toward the close of this period. As society changed, so did the Church, and with it the Vincentians. The process was difficult and painful, but it moved the Congregation in directions originally laid down by the Founder. Increasingly, the members emphasized mutual cooperation with many Vincentian-inspired lay organizations, the Vincentian Family. The inspiration shared among them all has been a further manifestation of the compelling insights of St. Vincent de Paul.
Durante los últimos años, la educación universitaria vive un proceso de reforma continuo. Cada día que pasa se presenta una nueva metodología pedagógica, una original manera de evaluar, una insólita tecnología que aplicar en el aula, una inédita función del profesorado o una flamante competencia que adquirir. Todo eso está muy bien, especialmente para aquellos que se lamentaban por tener una educación universitaria caduca. Sin embargo, tanta mudanza y restauración ¿no habrán causado una cierta desorientación en torno a los fines y el ethos de dicha educación? La educación universitaria no ha funcionado como debiera si esta consiste en una especie de carrera de obstáculos, que son las asignaturas, para llegar al título, que es la meta. La realidad demuestra, por lo menos a nuestro entender, que año tras año un buen número de estudiantes no se percatan de que son miembros de una comunidad llamada universidad.
The Entrepreneurial Research University in Latin America examines the fascinating clashes between the Latin American tradition and the influence of new globalized forms of organization represented by entrepreneurial university models. With particular emphasis on the governance of university research, the author aims to answer key questions: Why and how do local traditions or global forces shape structural and cultural organizational change?
