Dave Krehbiel's fast-moving memoir, Through the Door: A Horn-Player's Journey, relates the adventures of a young musician who uses his musical talents to cover up his scholastic shortcomings. In so doing, he finds himself, miraculously, in the career of his dreams-playing principal horn for Chicago, Detroit, and San Francisco symphony orchestras. When the door opens for him, he finds himself in his first job, playing assistant principal horn for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra where he faces constant intimidation by its maestro, Fritz Reiner. He also finds himself plagued by a crippling performance anxiety so great that on occasion he almost wishes he would be in a traffic accident on his way to Symphony Hall rather than face performing that night. Survival in his new career means learning to control his anxiety. While sharing the innovative ways in which he gains confidence and learns to manage his fear, he leads us on an exhilarating musical adventure where he brings to life the joys and challenges of performing his favorite orchestral works with famous conductors and composers, and develops a memorable bond with Paul Hindemith. The pranks he plays break the tension of constant performing and may be seen as veiled lessons reminiscent of Strauss's fifteenth century folk-hero, Till Eulenspiegel. "I'd rather be scared to death than bored to death," Krehbiel quips, and with intelligent humor he inspires us to face, without fear, whatever lessons are on the other side of the doors the universe opens to us.

In 1921 Tulsa’s Greenwood District, known then as the nation’s “Black Wall Street,” was one of the most prosperous African American communities in the United States. But on May 31 of that year, a white mob, inflamed by rumors that a young Black man had attempted to rape a white teenage girl, invaded Greenwood. By the end of the following day, thousands of homes and businesses lay in ashes, and perhaps as many as three hundred people were dead. Tulsa, 1921 shines new light into the shadows that have long been cast over this extraordinary instance of racial violence. With the clarity and descriptive power of a veteran journalist, author Randy Krehbiel digs deep into the events and their aftermath and investigates decades-old questions about the local culture at the root of what one writer has called a white-led pogrom. Krehbiel analyzes local newspaper accounts in an unprecedented effort to gain insight into the minds of contemporary Tulsans. In the process he considers how the Tulsa World, the Tulsa Tribune, and other publications contributed to the circumstances that led to the disaster and helped solidify enduring white justifications for it. Some historians have dismissed local newspapers as too biased to be of value for an honest account, but by contextualizing their reports, Krehbiel renders Tulsa’s papers an invaluable resource, highlighting the influence of news media on our actions in the present and our memories of the past. The Tulsa Massacre was a result of racial animosity and mistrust within a culture of political and economic corruption. In its wake, Black Tulsans were denied redress and even the right to rebuild on their own property, yet they ultimately prevailed and even prospered despite systemic racism and the rise during the 1920s of the second Ku Klux Klan. As Krehbiel considers the context and consequences of the violence and devastation, he asks, Has the city—indeed, the nation—exorcised the prejudices that led to this tragedy?

Politicians and pundits alike have complained that the divided governments of the last decades have led to legislative gridlock. Not so, argues Keith Krehbiel, who advances the provocative theory that divided government actually has little effect on legislative productivity. Gridlock is in fact the order of the day, occurring even when the same party controls the legislative and executive branches. Meticulously researched and anchored to real politics, Krehbiel argues that the pivotal vote on a piece of legislation is not the one that gives a bill a simple majority, but the vote that allows its supporters to override a possible presidential veto or to put a halt to a filibuster. This theory of pivots also explains why, when bills are passed, winning coalitions usually are bipartisan and supermajority sized. Offering an incisive account of when gridlock is overcome and showing that political parties are less important in legislative-executive politics than previously thought, Pivotal Politics remakes our understanding of American lawmaking.

An unforgettable memoir about one woman’s story of overcoming neglect in the U.S. foster-care system and finding her place in the world. Drawing on her experience as one of society’s abandoned children, Regina Louise tells how she emerged from the cruel, unjust system, not only to survive, but to flourish . . . After years of jumping from one fleeting, often abusive home to the next, Louise meets a counselor named Jeanne Kerr. For the first time in her young life, Louise knows what it means to be seen, wanted, understood, and loved. After Kerr tries unsuccessfully to adopt Louise, the two are ripped apart—seemingly forever—and Louise continues her passage through the cold cinder-block landscape of a broken system, enduring solitary confinement, overmedication, and the actions of adults who seem hell-bent on convincing her that she deserves nothing, that she is nothing. But instead of losing her will to thrive, Louise remains determined to achieve her dream of a higher education. After she ages out of the system, Louise is thrown into adulthood and, haunted by her trauma, struggles to finish school, build a career, and develop relationships. As she puts it, it felt impossible “to understand how to be in the world.” Eventually, Louise learns how to confront her past and reflect on her traumas. She starts writing, quite literally, a new future for herself, a new way to be. Louise weaves together raw, sometimes fragmented memories, excerpts from real documents from her case file, and elegant reflections to tell the story of her painful upbringing and what came after. The result is a rich, engrossing account of one abandoned girl’s efforts to find her place in the world, people to love, and people to love her back. Praise for Someone Has Led This Child to Believe “Regina Louise’s childhood ordeal and quest to find true family are enthralling and ultimately triumphant. I cheered her every step of the way.” —Julia Scheeres, New York Times–bestselling author of Jesus Land “Revealing and much needed.” —Booklist “Her story had a distinctly raw edge to it, as she chronicled . . . how she was deemed mentally disturbed and incorrigible for wanting what so many children from intact families took for granted, and how she triumphed over unbelievable odds.” —Kirkus Reviews “There’s pain and beauty in Louise’s vulnerability and her willingness to evict personal experience from the singular realm of self and take it into the world.” —Foreword Reviews

Why do some individuals transcend the turbulence of troubled childhoods as they transition to adulthood, while others are doomed to replicate the past and remain mired in the dark memories of their pasts? James Krehbiel, Ed.S., LPC, CCBT, explores, explains and answers this pivotal question in Troubled Childhood, Triumphant Life. While many people enjoyed happy, robust youths filled with love and support, for others childhood memories are riddled with painful recollections of hurt, neglect and shame. Repressed feelings centering around a traumatic upbringing are habitually veiled beneath a cloak of what krehbiel calls the "magical illusions" that children cling to as they grow up. As adults, they still seek to gain the approval and validation of their absent and/or abusive parents. Gleaned from fifteen years of working with children and adults, Krehbiel lays out a clear guide for a new path by showing: Steps to leave behind the illusions of childhood for those who have struggled from the aftermath of traumatic rearing Ways to adapt positively to adulthood in the wake of parental abuse Approaches to reframe unhappy childhood histories and bring closure in the present. Methods to explore the techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy in combating such stress-related mental ailments as obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder related to childhood abuse Strategies abused individuals can use to break the cycle of repeating destructive processes with the next generation Troubled Childhood, Triumphant Life will help adults find hope and healing as they strengthen their resolves to make life-altering decisions, leaving the past behind them and opening the door to happy, fulfilling futures. The current cultural assumptions about love, sex, dating and marriage are not only absurd, but a danger to society and to individuals. We're taken the most successful institution known to man, tinkered with it, played with it, and toyed with it until it's barely functional any more. Marriage simply isn't such a great deal any more, which is why many people are turning away from it. Especially young men. And if you look at the stats on divorce and the way men are treated in the family courts, you can hardly blame them. This little book says that the problem lies with all the modern assumptions we've tagged on to marriage. Marriage is (or at least it was) the structure that took the complicated mess of who we are as men and women and created a legal and social framework that used our natural impulses and desires to create a stable society. Marriage is what keeps human cultures from devolving into chaos. As western society has gotten further and further from a reality-based perspective on the sexes, marriage has been on the rocks. Some say there's even a marriage strike. These 50 politically incorrect thoughts call young men to abandon the modern approach and look at love, marriage and sex from a different point of view. It's a call to be counter-cultural in a way the hippies couldn't have imagined. Please note: this is not a scholarly work. If you're looking for studies and footnotes, look elsewhere. This book isn't intended to prove anything. It simply offers a different perspective.

"It seems to me that a good deal has been crowded into my life and I almost feel that if I had to 'lay off' I could easily live on the fond recollections of the past ...... I'm almost willing to wager, at this early day, that sometime in the years hence I'll have collected a batch of such sweet and wholesome recollections that can be rated second to none. But best of all, there will be something besides a batch of recollections. For I believe that work with a capital W is the great source of contentment and pleasure, and since consistent work is bound, in my line, to produce something lasting, I hope someday to give pleasure to others in helping them to fish up some pleasant recollection that had most slipped away in the past." Children and youth will just “catch” the faith of their parents, right? Not necessarily. Talking with kids about Jesus no longer comes naturally to many Christian parents. In Raising Disciples, pastor Natalie Frisk helps us reconnect faith and parenting, equipping parents to model what following Jesus looks like in daily life. Filled with authenticity, flexibility, humor, and prayer, Frisk outlines how parents can make openings for their children to experience God in their daily lives. As curriculum pastor at The Meeting House, one of the largest churches in Canada, Frisk calls parents who follow Christ to ask the big questions about the spiritual formation of children and teens. In practical and thoughtful ways, she equips parents to disciple their kids in various stages of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Raising Disciples will awaken parents to the possibly of Jesus-centered parenting and encourage us to engage in the lost art of discipling our own kids.
