Karl Blossfeldt's monochrome photographs present semi-abstract studies of diverse flora, bridging the 19th- and 20th-century worlds of image-making and bringing a distinctly sculptural aspect to a two-dimensional medium.

Blossfeldt photographed the flowers, buds and seed capsules of thousands of plants, all in extreme close-up and in front of a neutral background. When he published his book Art Forms in Nature in 1928, he became famous overnight. His contemporaries were enchanted by the abstract shapes and structures in nature which he revealed to the world. This book contains 30 largely unknown photos in addition to all the texts and plates in Blossfeldt's three books: Art Forms in Nature, Magic Garden of Nature and Magic in Nature.

In the traditional Māori world, the moko, or facial or body tattoo, was a sign of great mana and status. Male warriors wore elaborate tattoos on their faces and bodies; women took more delicate chin tattoos. After almost dying out in the twentieth century, Māori tattooing is now experiencing a powerful revival, with many young Māori wearing the moko as a spectacular gesture of racial pride. This examines the use of tattooing by traditional and contemporary Māori and links it to other aspects of Māori culture. Gender issues are considered along with tattooing techniques both old and new. The book features case studies of modern Māori who have made a personal decision to be tattooed; the role and status of the tattooers; exploitation of the moko in popular culture around the world by figures such as rock singers and football players.

The short-lived Japanese magazine Provoke is recognized as a major achievement in world photography of the postwar era, uniting the country's most contentious examples of protest photography, vanguard fine art, and critical theory of the late 1960s and early 70s in only three issues overall. Provoke is accordingly treated here as a model synthesis of the complexities and overlapping uses of photography in postwar Japan. The writing and images by Provoke's members - critic Koji Taki, poet Takahiko Okada, photographers Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama - were suffused with the tactics developed in some Japanese protest books which made use of innovative graphic design and provocatively "poor" materials. Recording live actions, photography in these years was also an expressive form suited to emphasize and critique the mythologies of modern life with a wide spectrum of performing artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Koji Enokura and Jiro Takamatsu. This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition ever to be held about the magazine and its creators and focuses on its historical context. It covers the preliminary period leading to its first and the aftermath following its last issue. Provoke takes shape as a strongly interpretative explanation of currents in Japanese art and society at a moment of historical collapse and renewal.
