The Mongrel is translated from the original Third Reich book with the title Der Pudelmopsdackelpinscher - literally translatable as The Poodle-Pug-Dachshund-Fox-Terrier (which is also the title of one of the chapters) by Ernst Hiemer. The original illustrations by Willi Hofman - over thirty small black and white sketches - are also included. Nonetheless, this book consists primarily of text, not pictures. Originally published by the Strmer publishing house of Julius Streicher in Nuremberg in 1940, this now rare - and much sought after by collectors - book was aimed at children. It contains a dozen stories about dangerous or harmful animals, each followed by an unflattering comparison to Jewry. These animals include, but are not limited to, hyenas, grasshoppers, blood-suckers, poisonous snakes, tape-worms and bacillus. This book is also rare, even among Third Reich books, in its open call to totally destroy Jewry, and indeed world-wide, as a necessary final step in an inescapable struggle to the death between Jewry and all the non-Jewish folks of the world. Here is a quote from page 50: Enlightenment alone, however, cannot solve the Jewish question. A folk that knows the Jew must also have the strength to ruthlessly act against the world enemy. Just like the snake threat is only then totally removed, if the poisonous snakes are totally cleaned out, so is the Jewish question only then solved, if Jewry is destroyed. Mankind must know that in the Jewish question there is only a hard "either-or"; for: If we do not kill the Jewish poisonous snake, then it will kill us! Softcover. 64pp.

Among the most controversial of Nazi publications was a book for children, published in 1938 under the title Der Giftpilz-or, The Poisonous Mushroom. Here, the Jewish threat to German society was portrayed in the most simplistic and elemental terms. The author, Ernst Hiemer, put together 17 short vignettes or morality stories intended to warn children of the dangers posed by Jews. Jews were depicted as conniving, thieving, treacherous liars who would do anything for personal gain. 'Avoid Jews at all costs, ' was Hiemer's underlying message. Though aimed at children aged roughly 8 to 14, Hiemer's lessons were intended for all readers-older siblings, parents, and grandparents. Following Hitler's lead, and not without justification, Jews were presented as a profound threat to German society; they had to be shunned and ultimately removed from the nation, if the German people were to flourish. Long out of circulation, and banned in Germany and elsewhere, this new edition reproduces a work of historical importance-including full color artwork by German cartoonist Philipp Rupprecht ("Fips"). The book was repeatedly cited at the Nuremberg Trials as evidence of 'Nazi cruelty', and was used by prosecutors to justify a death sentence for its publisher, Julius Streicher. If only for the sake of history, the reading public should have access to one of the more intriguing and notorious publications of the Third Reich.

Why do totalitarian propaganda such as those created in Nazi Germany and the former German Democratic Republic initially succeed, and why do they ultimately fail? Outside observers often make two serious mistakes when they interpret the propaganda of this time. First, they assume the propaganda worked largely because they were supported by a police state, that people cheered Hitler and Honecker because they feared the consequences of not doing so. Second, they assume that propaganda really succeeded in persuading most of the citizenry that the Nuremberg rallies were a reflection of how most Germans thought, or that most East Germans were convinced Marxist-Leninists. Subsequently, World War II Allies feared that rooting out Nazism would be a very difficult task. No leading scholar or politician in the West expected East Germany to collapse nearly as rapidly as it did. Effective propaganda depends on a full range of persuasive methods, from the gentlest suggestion to overt violence, which the dictatorships of the twentieth century understood well. In many ways, modern totalitarian movements present worldviews that are religious in nature. Nazism and Marxism-Leninism presented themselves as explanations for all of life—culture, morality, science, history, and recreation. They provided people with reasons for accepting the status quo. Bending Spines examines the full range of persuasive techniques used by Nazi Germany and the German Democratic Republic, and concludes that both systems failed in part because they expected more of their propaganda than it was able to deliver.

Beautiful. Disturbing. Enlightening. Beginning in the 1920s, a man named Julius Streicher published a small weekly German newspaper called Der Stürmer. Its mission was straightforward: to warn the German people about the threats posed by foreign and domestic Jews. The dangers were very real, and Streicher's stories gave a blunt and direct account of them. A key feature of Der Stürmer was its political cartoons. The cover of every issue, and several interior pages, displayed cartoons depicting various Jewish dangers, in a most striking and graphic form. The lead cartoonist was a man named 'Fips' Rupprecht. His cartoons became the signature feature of the newspaper, and grew to represent the broader German struggle against Jewry. With the demise of National Socialist Germany, Der Stürmer and Fips' cartoons were largely forgotten. Or rather, they were buried-the victorious nations certainly did not want old Nazi images floating around, raising difficult questions and making people think. Recently, though, a skilled digital artist named Robert Penman rediscovered the forgotten images. He carefully restored, colorized, and reissued them. Here, for the first time, he has compiled 200 of the best Fips images, as they have never been seen before. Penman has done a masterful job. The images are sharp, crisp, and compelling. The colors are stunningly vivid. The effect is truly astonishing. Fips' cartoons, originally printed on cheap newsprint, come alive for the first time. Every image is a small masterpiece, a true work of contemporary art. And one each tells a story-a story with relevance for the present day. // This is the deluxe coffee-table edition of Pan-Judah!: large 8.5x11" layout, hardcover, high quality color printing on high-density paper. More economical editions (6x9" paperback and hardcover) will soon be available.
