Excerpt from Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 1908, Vol. 9 There, I believe, was the mistake. The percipient, knowing beforehand that a given number of letters or notes would be sent, could not but try to guess, his mind entering into action, and that would, of course, prevent him from giving his undivided attention to the message sent. The percipient's mind must remain in a passive state, and his inward vision a perfect blank, in a state of expectation. Excerpt from Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 1908, Vol. 13 Miss alice johnson read a paper on Some Recent Sittings for Physical Phenomena in America, of which the following is an abstract: Some time ago at one of the meetings of the Society, a description had been given by Dr. J. H. Gower of some remarkable physical phenomena - in particular the movements of heavy tables untouched by any one and in a good light which he had witnessed in the course of the last few years in a private circle of his own friends, with no professional medium among them, in a town in one of the Western States of America. Dr. Gower having invited Miss Johnson to take part in these sittings, she went to America last August, and spent nearly a month in the town where they were held, attending during that time eighteen sittings in four different houses. The phenomena witnessed were - she was told - about up to the average level of the sittings, but no decisive movements of large objects that were clearly without contact with any of the sitters occurred. These, however, were stated to have happened only some half-a-dozen times during the four or five years that the sittings had been going on. Excerpt from Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 1912, Vol. 15 Freud insists that in every dream some incident of the preceding day appears. Dr. Prince, working with 'a subject who could be put' into several hypnotic states, discovered that ideas which passed through the mind just before going to sleep invariably appeared in the dreams. This conclusion does not invalidate that of Freud, and if it is corroborated by other observers it may prove an important advance in our knowledge of the sources of the content of dreams. Excerpt from Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, 1908, Vol. 2: Section "B" Of the American Institute for Scientific Research There is but one inference to be drawn from these con siderations: either the incompleteness of our mortal, frag mentary life must have for its satisfaction a future answering to our aspirations, either this or man's reason is but a borri ble leprosy of the mind. Between Spiritual evolution and cosmic madness there is no middle ground. On the one rest all truth and faith; with the other is only delirium and chaos.
