Excerpt from Journal of the Bath and West and Southern Counties Society, 1897-98, Vol. 8 The fact that tuberculosis is an infectious disease due to a specific cause is the real starting point for its suppression; for, if it were not an infectious but a hereditary disease, then our hopes of ultimate victory, considering how many of our cattle are affected, would be but small indeed, and the revelations of tuberculin, by far the most powerful diagnostic yet discovered, would only help to make the end seem farther off than ever. The old belief that tuberculosis is hereditary - in the sense of being handed on from sire or dam to progeny - is still held by some veterinarians and by a large proportion of our stock breeders and stock owners, but this belief has declined among medical men, and it will also undoubtedly decline among veterinarians and stock-owners. This old belief in heredity, modified to the extent that tubercular ancestors hand on to their descen dants a hereditary tendency to acquire the disease, is now more widely supported, and, later on in this article, it will be somewhat closely examined. Excerpt from Journal of the Bath and West and Southern Counties Society, 1901-1902, Vol. 12 But, worst of all, the open-field system of cultivation, bou1 up as it was with the grazing of the tillage fields by stock durii the autumn of each year, made the cultivation of roots at clover impossible, and without these two types of crop a ration rotation was absolutely precluded. And not only was a common interest in arable land fatal agricultural progress, but the same held true in, regard to t common pasturage of live stock. The opportunities for t judicious mating and selection of animals - which, combin with a liberal diet, are the basis of improvement in live stock were altogether absent under a system of common grazir Disease, too, would necessarily be rife amongst flocks and her into which any member of a community had the right to tu animals of doubtful health, if not actually suffering from a speci ailment. So detrimental was the system to the interests stock-breeding that, as Sir John Sinclair, the first President the old Board of Agriculture, pointed out in 1795, it was font more profitable to hire enclosed land for the breeding of t' )etter classes of sheep than to turn them on to the commo for nothing. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...in 1897, namely, an excessively rapid development of acidity, so that the curd was vatted at 12.10. This was not the first time that the vinegar taint had been present in the curd, but it had not been so highly developed on any previous day. It occurred from time to time up to the 17th May, then w-as absent until the 12th June, was present again on the 24th and 25th June, and was not again present during the season. The organism which produces the taint was isolated on several occasions and carefully studied, and was found to be identical with that of 1897. In spite of every effort, I had been unable to find any difference between it and the bacillus acidi lactic i, except the marked power which it possesses of producing a strong pungent smell of bay leaves not only in the curd but also, though to a much smaller extent, in a milk culture. It may be a species of lactic acid organism, but on this point I am unable to speak with certainty. Its close resemblance to the lactic acid bacillus renders it most difficult to investigate, for it always seems associated with that bacillus, and I have never been able to find it in any substance where the Bacillus acidi lactici was not present. All my attempts to trace its source have proved futile. Although the results obtained have not been conclusive, I think it only right to mention that, so far as can be judged, it is almost always found in stale milk, where this has accumulated, for example, in the crack of a faulty vessel, or in a cloth which has been used to wipe up milk and has not been properly cleaned afterwards. These were proved on several occasions to have been the cause of the taint. The effect of the vinegar taint was, as has been stated, to hasten the production of acidity. Now, to...

Excerpt from Journal of the Bath and West and Southern Counties Society, 1896-97, Vol. 7 On the other hand, there are some districts of the Uni Kingdom which are singularly adapted for breeding and rear young stock. Ireland affords the best illustration, here they ft many cattle during the summer, but they can only fatten a l bullocks m the winter. It seems quite natwal that as the Ir b1eede1 wants to dispose of his lean stock in the autumn, wl the arable grazier wants them to consume his roots, evl facility should be afforded for the seller and the buyer to co plate a bargain which should be profitable to both parties. A we may be: quite certain that no amount of argument or adv will make the Irish farmer attempt winter grazing, or the av age Norfolk farmer keep growing cattle upon his arable land the summer.
