This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) bridge maintenance engineers, coating specialists, chemists, and researchers. Manufacturers and suppliers of corrosion protection products and systems for exposed structural steel on existing bridges will also find it of interest. This synthesis describes current practice regarding maintenance and protection strategies for exposed structural steel on existing bridges. NCHRP Synthesis 251, Lead-Based Paint Removal for Steel Highway Bridges ( 1997), provides a complementary and more in-depth treatment of maintenance issues involving lead-based paint removal. This report of the Transportation Research Board defines the maintenance management systems and decision making criteria used by transportation agencies for maintaining exposed bridge steel. Material selection criteria, surface preparation and application practices, quality control and quality assurance programs, and funding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The impact of recent and proposed environmental and worker protection regulations on current practice is reported. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. Responses to the survey, Appendix C to this document, are published on the Internet as NCHRP Web Document 11.

This synthesis will be of interest to bridge painting contractors, bridge maintenance and construction engineers, environmental engineers, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, and others interested in bridge paint removal. Information is provided on current practices in bridge paint removal, containment, and disposal, with special attention paid to environmental, health, and cost issues, along with a discussion of current environmental regulations governing paint removal practices. The removal of bridge paint is a nationwide problem with sensitive environmental concerns and rapid changes in available technology and regulatory oversight. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice for bridge paint removal, containment, and disposal, especially with regard to lead-based or other toxic paints. Additionally, current environmental regulations and health concerns in this area are examined.

New USEPA regulations require changes to water treatment that can accelerate infrastructure degradation. One recent regulation of particular concern in this regard is the Enhanced Coagulation Rule, which requires improved removal of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) from water supplies. One of the most common means of improving TOC removal is to enhance existing coagulation treatment processes by reducing coagulation pH or using higher coagulant doses. There is substantial concern that the lowered coagulation pHs and higher coagulant doses will significantly accelerate degradation of infrastructure. The goal of this research was to concisely describe what is known about accelerated degradation of infrastructure from conditions brought about during enhanced coagulation. It was anticipated that such an effort would allow utilities to decrease damage by learning from the experiences of others, reviewing of the literature, and executing some new experiments. Original research on performance of materials under a wide variety of blasts, impacts, severe loading and fireCritical information for protecting buildings and civil infrastructure against human attack, deterioration and natural disastersTest and design data for new types of concrete, steel and FRP materials This technical book is devoted to the empirical and theoretical analysis of how structures and the materials constituting them perform under the extreme conditions of explosions, fire, and impact. Each of the 119 fully refereed presentations is published here for the first time and was selected because of its original contribution to the science and engineering of how materials, bridges, buildings, tunnels and their components, such as beams and pre-stressed parts, respond to potentially destructive forces. Emphasis is placed on translating empirical data to design recommendations for strengthening structures, including strategies for fire and earthquake protection as well as blast mitigation. Technical details are provided on the development and behavior of new resistant materials, including reinforcements, especially for concrete, steel and their composites.

This is an open access book.ICEM started in 2016, ICEM 2016-2022 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Engineering Management to a common forum. And we achieved the primary goal which is to promote research and developmental activities in Engineering Management, and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world. 2023 8th International Conference on Engineering Management (ICEM 2023) will be held on September 8-10, 2023 in Wuhan, China. Except that, ICEM 2023 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Engineering Management to a common forum. We will discuss and study about Project & Engineering Management , Visual analysis of big data, Supply Chain Management and Modeling, Disaster Modeling and Simulation and other fields. ICEM 2023 also aims to provide a platform for experts, scholars, engineers, technicians and technical R & D personnel to share scientific research achievements and cutting-edge technologies, understand academic development trends, expand research ideas, strengthen academic research and discussion, and promote the industrialization cooperation of academic achievements. The conference sincerely invites experts, scholars, business people and other relevant personnel from universities, scientific research institutions at home and abroad to attend and exchange! The conference will be held every year to make it an ideal platform for people to share views and experiences in Engineering Management and related areas. Engineering management refers to the decision-making, planning, organization, command, coordination, and control of engineering to achieve expected goals and effectively utilize resources. The Engineering Management major cultivates students with theoretical foundations in construction engineering technology, economics, management, law, ecology, humanities, and other fields required by the new engineering discipline. They receive basic training as engineers and consultants, and possess independent thinking ability, engineering practice ability, organizational management ability, and international perspective as composite senior engineering management talents. We sincerely welcome our colleagues worldwide to join us for this conference. We look forward to seeing you in Wuhan, China for this exciting event!
