Who would walk out of a relationship with a United States Senator and, with eyes wide open, into the arms of a nationally known singing sensation? Jeffrey L. Withers, the pride of Connecticut, the darling of the Democratic party and one of the most sought after bachelors in Washington had swooped her up from an L.A. fundraiser eight months earlier and whisked her off to “his” town, set her up in an apartment a few short blocks from his and whirled her around the city like a fairy princess. Everything seemed terrific until she realized the loneliness she still endured. The novelty of being on the arm of a United States Senator seemed to be wearing off, the excitement, the thrill, and the newness, all gone.

With no skills besides scoring the perfect stilettos, maxing out her credit card, and partying till dawn, Marisol Winston is about to get a lesson in the real world--and in love. . . After years of perfecting her party-girl image, Marisol wants to open an L.A.-based deluxe boutique. Unfortunately her father refuses to foot the bill until she agrees to do a stint in shopaholic rehab. Surely she can survive a few weeks without Dior, right? But part of Marisol's anti-retail remedy entails getting a real job as a nanny/housekeeper in Podunkville, Arizona. Suddenly she's knee-deep in PB & J and dirty laundry, surprised to find herself just a teensy bit smitten with her three sticky-fingered charges--and their deliciously distracting Dad (even if he does wear discount denim). . . Quarterback Cash Connelly has one last shot at being re-signed to the pros, which means he needs a nanny who runs a tight ship. Marisol seems to know way more about Tiffany's than T-ball, and she has more miniskirted sex appeal than is strictly necessary for laundering jockey shirts. But his kids seem positively smitten. Well, who wouldn't love a woman who serves up ice cream for breakfast? Now if only Cash can find a way to stick to his strict hands-off-the-nanny policy. . . "Lisa Plumley creates charming characters. Her books are a delight!"--Rachel Gibson

In an online, interconnected world, democracy is increasingly made up of wikis and blogs, pokes and tweets. Citizens have become accidental journalists thanks to their handheld devices, politicians are increasingly working online, and the traditional sites of democracy - assemblies, public galleries, and plazas - are becoming less and less relevant with every new technology. And yet, this book argues, such views are leading us to confuse the medium with the message, focusing on electronic transmission when often what cyber citizens transmit is pictures and narratives of real democratic action in physical space. Democratic citizens are embodied, take up space, battle over access to physical resources, and perform democracy on physical stages at least as much as they engage with ideas in virtual space. Combining conceptual analysis with interviews and observation in capital cities on every continent, John Parkinson argues that democracy requires physical public space; that some kinds of space are better for performing some democratic roles than others; and that some of the most valuable kinds of space are under attack in developed democracies. He argues that accidental publics like shoppers and lunchtime crowds are increasingly valued over purposive, active publics, over citizens with a point to make or an argument to listen to. This can be seen not just in the way that traditional protest is regulated, but in the ways that ordinary city streets and parks are managed, even in the design of such quintessentially democratic spaces as legislative assemblies. The book offers an alternative vision for democratic public space, and evaluates 11 cities - from London to Tokyo - against that ideal.

Now in paperback– the ten things we must do to ensure a safe and peaceful world, from legendary environmentalist Jane Goodall and brilliant animal behaviorist, Marc Bekoff. Combining her life's work living among the chimpanzees with her spiritual perspective on the relationship between humans and animals, legendary behavioral scientist Jane Goodall sets forth ten trusts that we as humans have as custodians of the planet: 1. Respect all life 2. Live as part of the Animal Kingdom 3. Educate our children to respect animals 4. Treat animals as you would like to be treated 5. Be a steward 6. Value the sounds of nature and help preserve them 7. Do not harm life in order to learn about it 8. Have the courage of your convictions 9. Act knowing that your actions make a difference 10. Act knowing that you are not alone. Filled with inspirational stories, The Ten Trusts provides lessons Jane Goodall has learned from a lifetime of experience, with the warmth and emotion her readers have come to expect from her. Marc Bekoff, cofounder of the Roots and Shoots program with Jane, also contributes his profound insights and research, which Jane has come to rely on. Together, they share their hope and vision for humanity and all the earth's creatures, distilled into ten eloquent spiritual lessons. Within these ten trusts, Goodall reveals how we can gain true enlightenment by living in harmony with the animal kingdom and honoring the interconnection between all species.
