From the Land of the Rising Sun comes the delightful and affectionate toy dog known as the Japanese Chin, revered for centuries as a palace treasure and today counted among the world’s most beloved companion dogs. This Comprehensive Owner’s Guide, written by Juliette Cunliffe, provides an entertaining portrait of the Chin’s origins and history, including Commodore Perry’s famous door-opening visit to Japan, the breed’s rise to the favor of England’s Queen Alexandra, and the Chin’s introduction to the United States. In the chapter on the breed’s characteristics, the author reveals her insight into this "happy little character with a down-to-earth, yet bumptious, personality." Potential owners are made aware that, despite his small size, the Chin has a larger-than-life approach to the world, and that as a home companion, the Chin demands affection and little else, being a naturally clean pet, often compared to a cat in cleanliness, sophistication, and self-awareness. In the home of a loving owner, the Chin will thrive and become a superb addition to the family, even one with children and cat or two! New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author’s advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

The Japanese Chin is a breed of toy dog that originates from China. The breed is commonly known as the 'Japanese Spaniel,' and was highly popular with Japanese nobility - hence why the breed's name alludes to the 'Japanese.' It is believed that the Japanese Chin breed could have originated in around 732 AD! However, other records indicate that the Japanese Chin probably would have come into existence during the mid-6th century as this is when the breed was gifted to a Japanese Empress. Within Japanese culture dogs are mainly viewed as working or helper animals. This makes the Japanese Chin unique as the breed was developed for the purpose of companionship. Traditionally the ownership of a Japanese Chin was restricted to only Japanese nobility and royalty. Each group of nobles or royals bred the Japanese Chin to their own standard which has resulted in the Japanese Chin breed being high varied: differences in size, body type, eye set and coat density are common. Generally speaking, the Japanese Chin has a single overcoat that grows to a medium-long length. The breed's coat is commonly colored black and white, or red and white. The Japanese Chin is known for its unique state of permanent Strabismus of the eyes (cross eye). The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Japanese Chin. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Japanese Chin with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Japanese Chin is an alert, independent and intelligent breed. The Japanese Chin's temperament has been related to that of a cat, as it uses its paws to clean its face, enjoys resting on high surfaces, have a good sense of stability and is highly independent. The breed also is known to be incredibly loyal and affectionate towards its owners and family unit. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Japanese Chin's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Japanese Chin, raising your Japanese Chin from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Japanese Chin: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Japanese Chin," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Japanese Chin owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning a Japanese Chin and much more.
