This quotation, from the short story "The Bridge on the Zepa," by the 1961 Nobel laureate Ivo Andric, whose story, "Thirst," is included in this collection, reflects the essence of the state of human relations in the Balkans. The nineteenth-century stories deal with life in rural Serbia, characterized by realistic descriptions, simplicity, and appealing characters. In contrast, Serbia's twentieth-century authors are recognized for their courage and daring in confronting totalitarian communist norms, and later for literary innovations illustrating the environment, people, and values of democratic Serbia. These Serb writers rank among the masters of modern literature. The first short stories appearing in Serbia of literary value date from the middle of the nineteenth century. During that period, the Serbian literary milieu was impacted significantly by Western European and Russian cultures, due mostly to two developments: firstly, a number of Serbian students acquired higher education in Western European countries, and upon returning, exerted their influence on the Serbian literary scene, bringing with them new and progressive ideas. Through the influx of such foreign-educated Serb intellectuals, Serbia was able to establish at least a peripheral literary connection with Western Europe. Secondly, Russian literature of the nineteenth century with its two literary giants, Leo Tolstoy and Fedor Dostoyevsky, were accessible to Serbian intellectuals because of the similarity of the Serbian and Russian languages and the ability of Serbs to read some of the works in the original, as well as in translation. The first is the purely historical and political theme of Bosnia as the background of intrigue between Napoleonic France and Imperial Austria, each represented by its Consul and each trying to win over to its side the Turk, who at heart is equally hostile to both. The second theme is that of the gradually disintegrating effect of the East on western Europeans who have to live there: this is worked out in a masterly fashion in various figures in the book, some of whom have already succumbed to its insidious influence, while even those who resist are marked by it. The third theme is a study of the effect upon an honest, unimaginative man of serving a dictatorship in which at first he sincerely believes but whose aims and methods he comes with growing horror to doubt. Last and central to all is the theme of Bosnia itself, the spirit of the land and its people and the problem of their rescue from the pit of ignorance, backwardness, and poverty into which history has plunged them." Ivo Andric (1892-1975), Nobel Prize laureate for literature in 1961, is undoubtedly the most popular of all contemporary Yugoslav writers. Over the span of fifty-two years some 267 of his works have been published in thirty-three languages. Andric’s doctoral dissertation, The Development of Spiritual Life in Bosnia under the Influence of Turkish Rule (1924), never before translated into English, sheds important light on the author’s literary writings and must be taken into account in any current critical analysis of his work. Over his long and distinguished career as a diplomat and man of letters Andric never again so directly or discursively addressed, as a social historian, the impact of Turkish hegemony on the Bosnian people (1463–1878), a theme he returns to again and again in his novels. Although Andric’s fiction was embedded in history, scholars know very little of his actual readings in history and have no other comparable treatment of it from his own pen. This dissertation abounds with topics that Andric incorporated into his early stories and later novels, including a focus on the moral stresses and compromises within Bosnia’s four religious confessions: Catholic, Orthodox, Jew, and Muslim. Z. B. Juricic provides an extensive introduction describing the circumstances under which this work was written and situating it in Andric’s oeuvre. John F. Loud’s original bibliography drawn from this dissertation stands as the only comprehensive inventory of historical sources known to have been closely familiar to the author at this early stage in his development.
