The IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics, held in Trondheim July 3-7, 1995, was the eighth of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The previous meetings took place in Coventry, UK (1972), Sout'hampton, UK (1976), FrankfurtjOder, Germany (1982), Stockholm, Sweden (1984), Innsbruckjlgls, Austria (1987), Turin, Italy (1991) and San Antonio, Texas (1993). The symposium provided an extraordinary opportunity for scholars to meet and discuss recent advances in stochastic mechanics. The participants represented a wide range of expertise, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented toward applications. A significant achievement of the symposium was the very extensive discussions taking place over the whole range from highly theoretical questions to practical engineering applications. Several presentations also clearly demonstrated the substantial progress that has been achieved in recent years in terms of developing and implement ing stochastic analysis techniques for mechanical engineering systems. This aspect was further underpinned by specially invited extended lectures on computational stochastic mechanics, engineering applications of stochastic mechanics, and nonlinear active control. The symposium also reflected the very active and high-quality research taking place in the field of stochastic stability. Ten presentations were given on this topic ofa total of47 papers. A main conclusion that can be drawn from the proceedings of this symposium is that stochastic mechanics as a subject has reached great depth and width in both methodology and applicability.

Nonlinearity and stochastic structural dynamics is of common interest to engineers and applied scientists belonging to many disciplines. This volume contains selected papers presented at the Symposium on "Recent Developments in Non-linear Oscillations of Mechanical Systems", held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 2 - 5 March 1999. This Symposium was initiated and sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (lUI AM) and organised in conjunction with Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Ihe purpose of the Symposium was to bring together scientists active in different fields of oscillations with the aim to review the recent progress in theory of oscillations and engineering applications and to outline the prospects in its further achievements to then co-ordinate and direct research in this field to further co-operation between scientists and various scientific institutions. An International Scientific Committee was appointed by the Bureau of IUI AM with the following members: Nguyen Van Dao (Vietnam, Co-Chairman) E.J. Veda (Japan). This Committee selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented at the Symposium. As a result of this procedure, 52 active scientists from 16 countries responded to the invitation, and 42 papers were presented in lecture and poster discussion sessions.

Tribology is the science of friction, lubrication and wear of moving components. Results obtained from tribology are used to reduce energy losses in friction pro cesses, to reduce material losses due to wear, and to increase the service life of components. Contact Mechanics plays an important role in Tribology. Contact Mechanics studies the stress and strain states of bodies in contact; it is contact that leads to friction interaction and wear. This book investigates a variety of contact problems: discrete contact of rough surfaces, the effect of imperfect elasticity and mechanical inhomogeneity of contacting bodies, models of friction and wear, changes in contact characteristics during the wear process, etc. The results presented in this book were obtained during my work at the Insti tute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The first steps of this research were carried out under the supervision of Professor L. A. Galin who taught me and showed me the beauty of scientific research and solutions. Some of the problems included in the book were investigated together with my col leagues Dr. M. N. Dobychin, Dr. O. G. Chekina, Dr. I. A. Soldatenkov, and Dr. E. V. Tor skaya from the Laboratory of Friction and Wear (IPM RAS) and Prof. F. Sadeghi from Purdue University (West Lafayette, USA). I would like to express my thanks to them. This book is an adventure into the computer analysis of three dimensional composite structures using the finite element method (FEM). It is designed for Universities, for advanced undergraduates, for graduates, for researchers, and for practising engineers in industry. The text advances gradually from the analysis of simple beams to arbitrary anisotropic and composite plates and shells; it treats both linear and nonlinear behavior. Once the basic philosophy of the method is understood, the reader may expand its application and modify the computer programs to suit particular needs. The book arose from four years research at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. We present the theory and computer programs concisely and systematically so that they can be used both for teaching and applications. We have tried to make the book simple and clear, and to show the underlying physical and mathematical ideas. The FEM has been in existence for more than 50 years. One of the authors, John Argyris, invented this technique in World War II in the course of the check on the analysis of the swept back wing of the twin engined Meteor Jet Fighter. In this work, he also consistently applied matrix calculus and introduced triangular membrane elements in conjunction with two new definitions of triangular stresses and strains which are now known as the component and total measures. In fact, he was responsible for the original formulation of the matrix force and displacement methods, the forerunners of the FEM.
