This is about my life story growing up as the son of Irish immigrant parents; my childhood on the southside of Chicago, attending Catholic school for sixteen years, and graduating from Loyola University, Chicago; and my business career through a series of companies and positions with ever-increasing responsibilities. My story outlines the good opportunities that came my way and the wins and losses we all experience on life's journey.

I was the fifth of six children of Irish immigrants. I worked my way up from delivering newspapers on the South Side of Chicago to CEO of Merry-Go-Round Enterprises, which in 1987 Forbes magazine ranked as number 34 on its list of the best companies in America. My success began with the blessings and gifts I received from God and my parents: good health, and a keen sense for how to do a job better, faster, or with more enjoyment. On top of that, my parents and my Catholic education instilled in me the virtues of responsibility and discipline. Jeanne-my friend, my lover, and my rock for all these years-and I started our life together with only $2,600 to our name. In this book I tell about what I went through to get to where I am and share the lessons I learned along the way. My life is living proof that there are always setbacks in life. The key is how to respond to them. My philosophy has always been: Never give up. Always look forward. Never say Woe is me, but ask, What am I going to do next? If you believe in yourself and your abilities, keep trying, and keep working hard, things will work out. I pray that all of us will discover our God-given gifts and talents, and use them in ways that will help ourselves, our families, and the world around us flourish. We all have an opportunity to live a full and successful life. With faith in God and hard work, we all can.
It's Been One Hell of a Ride is a pretty sarcastic, totally true, and comical ride. A two-part book started as a journal of our family story to my Timm men. It's a book on how we began this ride. How we dealt with many life hiccups with humor. How we picked our battles and learned to breathe through the struggles. How we enjoyed the little things. Also, to remember the good times, remember the bad times, and to learn from it and move on. Keep trucking as this is your ride and ultimately up to you to make it the best ride it can be! In this creating process, it dawned on me that this book is not just for us but also for others. It's for all pondering their place on the path. It reassures all panickers this isn't going the way it was planned and that's okay. You just let the ride take you, learn to love it, and find the humor in it, as the grass really isn't greener over here or there. I'm sure many of you can relate that our rides have bumpy paths, but we always have the option to steer it in a different direction.

It’s Been a Pretty Good Ride By: Bob Harshbarger The genesis of this book came from Bob Harshbarger’s three daughters. They had been subjected to numerous tales over the years about where the Harshbargers came from and countless stories (mostly humorous) about their father growing up in a wheelchair. Bob’s children have encouraged him to write down some of these accounts; thus, along with some genealogical history, this “book” began. Oh, it didn’t start as a book.
