The book investigates multiple aspects of the patterning of Determiner Phrases (DP) in Bangla and develops a set of proposals to model the underlying syntactic structure of such elements. A broad aspect of this book is to re-assert the existing argument in the DP literature that DPs appear to share a parallel structure to the clauses. The book in particular shows that the Bangla DP-internal phrasal movements are instances of discourse driven phenomena. This further leads to project a fine structure of nominal left-periphery in the Bangla DP, that has been argued in the background of the cross-linguistic evidence drawn from Gungbe, Greek, Albanian, and Russian languages. The central theoretical discussion of the book primarily revolves around the key conceptual domains of adjective movement, ellipsis, definiteness, and wh-movement in the Bangla DP.

This volume brings the data that many in formal linguistics have dismissed as peripheral straight into the core of syntactic theory. By bringing together experts from syntax, semantics, pragmatics, philosophy of language, language acquisition, aphasia, and pidgin and creole studies, the volume makes a multidisciplinary case for the existence of nonsententials, which are analyzed in various chapters as root phrases and small clauses (Me; Me First!; Him worry?!; Class in session), and whose distinguishing property is the absence of Tense, and, with it, any syntactic phenomena that rely on Tense, including structural Nominative Case. Arguably, the lack of Tense specification is also responsible for the dearth of indicative interpretations among nonsententials, as well as for their heavy reliance on pragmatic context. So pervasive is nonsentential speech across all groups, including normal adult speech, that a case can be made that continuity of grammar lies in nonsentential, rather than sentential speech.

This book makes a significant contribution to the Second Language Acquisition research field as it is the only study that exists on the acquisition of the Spanish Determiner Phrase (DP) by speakers of a Bantu language. The corpus was compiled using data from 14 interviews carried out over a 25-month period. The subjects of the study were four Swahili speakers learning Spanish as a third language (English is their L2) at the State University of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The data collected longitudinally was used to characterize the DP of the Swahili-Spanish IL and observe Bantu transfer. This study also represents an important contribution to the discussion on Creole formation since it provides valuable information on the role played by adult speakers in the formation of Creole languages. In this book, the features of the DP in the IL are compared with those of the DP found in three Spanish-lexifier Creoles: Palenquero, Chabacano and Papiamento. Although similar work has been done comparing the interlanguage of learners of English and French with Creoles that have these languages as lexifiers, no comparative studies of this type have been conducted for Spanish. Moreover, in the case of Palenquero, this study also represents the first of its kind to examine languages in which the substrate and the L1 involved belong to the same family of Bantu languages.
