In 2002, sixty international specialists met to discuss problems of high P-unavailability as a soil nutrient for crops, and the hazards of increased phosphate input to aquatic habitats from industrial and mining activities, sewage disposal, detergents, and other sources. Among the presentations were updated solutions to enhance P-uptake by plants, bioremediation potential in the rehabilitation of ecosystems, taxonomic characterization interactions with mycorrizae, the physiological and molecular basis of PSM, and more.

Microorganisms of solubilizing phosphorus (P) pools in soils are considered essential in promoting P bioavailability. A study was conducted in laboratory to screen and isolate Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) taken from tropical upland reforestation soil in Sungai Chuchuh UniMAP Campus, Perlis and to evaluate the biodiversity between the sampling from Housing area (HA) and Orchard area (OA). The PSB were isolated from rhizhosphere on nutrient agar (NA) medium by the serial dilutions. Bacterial cells concentration was determined by using colony forming unit (CFU) method. On the other hand, the most efficient phosphate solubilizers were detected on National Botanical Research Institute Phosphorus (NBRIP) selective medium by measuring the clear zone around the bacterial colony. The highest Solubilizing efficiency (SE) activity (123.61 %) was found in PSB 5 (OA) strains grown in NBRIP selective media plate. The results were shown that about twelve (12) PSB strains were isolated and has been characterize as eight (8) gram positive and four (4) gram negative bacteria also has been classified based on their morphological criteria. Isolated PSB strains were capable to produce organic acids since the pH of medium has been reduced. PSB inoculants with their beneficial traits would be considered as potential biofertilizer for the sustainable agricultural systems especially in Tropical Upland Reforestation Soil in Sungai Chuchuh as well as in other places.

In the past half century, filamentous fungi have grown in commercial importance not only in the food industry but also as sources of pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of infectious and metabolic diseases and of specialty proteins and enzymes used to process foods, fortify detergents, and perform biotransformations. The commercial impact of molds is also measured on a negative scale since some of these organisms are significant as pathogens of crop plants, agents of food spoilage, and sources of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. Recent advances in the molecular genetics of filamentous fungi are finding increased application in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and enzyme industries, and this trend promises to continue as the genomics of fungi is explored and new techniques to speed genetic manipulation become available. This volume focuses on the filamentous fungi and highlights the advances of the past decade, both in methodology and in the understanding of genomic organization and regulation of gene and pathway expression.

More than a century has passed since the first bioformulations were introduced to the market. But there is still much to be done, explored and developed. Though bioformulations offer green alternatives and are important for sustainable agriculture, they make up only a small fraction of the total additions used to enhance crop yields or protect them from pests. There is a great need to develop bioformulations that can promote confidence among end users; accordingly, it is imperative that bioformulations to replace chemicals be reliable and overcome the shortcomings of the past. Bioformulations: for Sustainable Agriculture discusses all the issues related to the current limitations and future development of bioformulations. It examines in detail those bioformulations that include biofertilizers and biopesticides (also commonly known as bioinoculants), presenting a global picture of their development. Further chapters address diverse microbes that are already being or could be used as bioformulations. The book also discusses the techniques, tools and other additions required to establish bioformulations as trustworthy and global solutions. It assesses the types of bioformulations currently available on the market, while also considering the future roles of bioformulations, including the reclamation of marginal and polluted soils. Further, it discusses the current legislation and much-needed amendments. Overall the book provides a comprehensive outlook on the status quo of bioformulations and the future approaches needed to improve them and achieve sustainable agriculture and food security without sacrificing the quality of soils. This will be extremely important in offering chemical-free foods and a better future for generations to come.
