We live in an era of increasing availability of highly technological tools that allow for reducing, where possible, the invasiveness of the surgical procedures needed to remove cancer. Also in the head and neck area, transoral procedures increasingly replace the traditional, more invasive, open access procedures. Crucial developments promoting this evolution were the popularization of transoral laser microsurgery and, more recently, transoral robotic approaches. It is logical to expect that these approaches will entail better function for the patients, and thus better quality of life, provided that the obtained oncological radicality is the same or better than that obtained with the more invasive procedures of the past. All these “logical” assumptions still need confirmation and validation on large and independent series, however. This eBook collects the results of some of the most recent research efforts in this field. It contains studies aimed at advancing surgical technology and oncological philosophy, as well as studies assessing the oncological as well as the functional outcome following the application of these techniques. In this way this e-book aims at critically assessing and, where justified, boosting the development and popularization of these transoral approaches. The overall aim is evidently to improve both the oncological as well as the functional outcomes for the patient with laryngeal cancer.

This edition of Otolaryngologic Clinics focuses on all aspects of robotic-assisted surgery in Otolaryngology including current, well-accepted techniques as well as emerging applications of the technology. Interest in TORS has increased dramatically as other applications of robotic surgery are explored including robotic-assisted approaches to the thyroid, anterior skull base, and neck. Each article in this edition of Oto Clinics highlights a specific application of robotic surgery in Otolaryngology and includes a detailed step-by-step approach with associated online videos. In depth discussion of indications, complications, and technical pearls accompany each article. TORS for Tonsil cancer; Base of tongue Cancer; Larynx cancer; Sleep apnea; Parapharyngeal spcae; and Benign lesions of the pharynx is presented along with Robotic approaches to anterior skull base and thyroid, Transaxillary robotic thyroidectomy; Transfacial robotic thyroidectomy; and Robotic approaches to the neck.

The definitive state-of-the-art guide on laryngeal cancer treatment from world-renowned experts Ongoing advances in innovative technologies have improved the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal cancer, resulting in more optimal oncologic and functional patient outcomes. Laryngeal Cancer: Clinical Case-Based Approaches, by distinguished head and neck surgeon Rogério R. Dedivitis and internationally recognized coeditors, is a comprehensive reference that presents multiple options for similar lesions. Contributions from a diverse group of globally renowned subspecialists reflect the multidisciplinary treatment of laryngeal cancer. The book focuses on diverse primary subsites of laryngeal cancer; local, early-stage, and advanced disease stages; and current available treatment modalities for each type. Case study chapters include insightful discussion of several potential approaches, rationale for surgical decision making, radiographic findings, pearls, and pitfalls. Key Features Diverse approaches to glottic cancer including radiotherapy, transoral laser surgery, supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL), vertical laryngectomy, transoral laser microsurgery, chemoradiotherapy, and combined SCL and cricohyoidoepiglottopexy. Treatment modalities for supraglottic cancers such as transoral laser microsurgery, radiation therapy, and horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy. Salvage surgery, preservation protocol, and reconstructive flap techniques including pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, and antebrachial flap. High-quality images accompanying each case enhance clinical understanding of underlying pathologies and surgical approaches. Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, speech pathologists, and all clinicians who treat laryngeal disorders will benefit from this highly informative resource.
