DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe problems of the U.S. steel industry have been a source of public controversy for over twenty years. The industry has grown substantially smaller since the 1960s and hundreds of thousands of steelworkers have lost their jobs. Some steel firms and many steel mills have shut down entirely, profoundly affecting regional economies based on steel and its related industries. An industrial transformation of this magnitude has inevitably given rise to efforts to identify its underlying causes. This book is a contribution to that effort.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this book, Jeremiah I. Dibua challenges prevailing notions of Africa's development crisis by drawing attention to the role of modernization as a way of understanding the nature and dynamics of the crisis, and how to overcome the problem of underdevelopment. He specifically focuses on Nigeria and its development trajectory since it exemplifies the crisis of underdevelopment in the continent. He explores various theoretical and empirical issues involved in understanding the crisis, including state, class, gender and culture, often neglected in analysis, from an interdisciplinary, radical political economy perspective. This is the first book to adopt such an approach and to develop a new framework for analyzing Nigeria's and Africa's development crisis. It will influence the debate on the development dilemma of African and Third World societies and will be of interest to scholars and students of race and ethnicity, modern African history, class analysis, gender studies, and development studies.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe practical recommendations in this publication reflect the changes that have taken place in the iron and steel industry over the last 20 years or so, and changes to the ILO's approach to developing codes of practice. A leaner, flexible, more highly skilled workforce, new technology and a less prescriptive, more systems-oriented approach to addressing safety and health are reflected in the revised Code. It is intended to provide guidance to ILO constituents and all those responsible for addressing safety and health throughout the iron and steel industry. The general provisions of the Code cover: general responsibilities, duties and rights; the legal framework; safety and health management; reporting, recording and notification of work-related injuries and diseases, ill health and incidents and health services. Guidance on industry-specific prevention and protection includes: furnaces and ovens, foundries; handling molten material; rolling mills and coating lines; and recycling. There are also sections on: competence and training; personal protection; emergency preparedness; and welfare. Annexes to the Code include: workers' health surveillance; surveillance of the working environment; occupational exposure limits; and chemicals used in the iron and steel industry. This code replaces an earlier code that was adopted in 1981.
