Plasma Deposition, Treatment, and Etching of Polymers takes a broad look at the basic principles, the chemical processes, and the diagnostic procedures in the interaction of plasmas with polymer surfaces. This recent technology has yielded a large class of new materials offering many applications, including their use as coatings for chemical fibers and films. Additional applications include uses for the passivation of metals, the surface hardening of tools, increased biocompatibility of biomedical materials, chemical and physical sensors, and a variety of micro- and optoelectronic devices. - Appeals to a broad range of industries from microelectronics to space technology - Discusses a wide array of new uses for plasma polymers - Provides a tutorial introduction to the field - Surveys various classes of plasma polymers, their chemical and morphological properties, effects of plasma process parameters on the growth and structure of these synthetic materials, and techniques for characterization - Interests scientists, engineers, and students alike

Frontiers of Materials Research/Electronic And Optical Materials: Volume I is part of a five-volume compilation of the proceedings of C-MRS International 1990 Conference held in Beijing, China. The said conference discusses the areas of research in materials science. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers topics involved in the development and progress of materials such as the focused beam ion; intermetallic compounds; polymers; and the application of computers in the field. Part 2 includes studies related to high Tc superconductors such as methods related to the field; the effects of oxygen and partial pressure on the properties of superconducting; and the study of superconductivity and crystallography. Part 3 presents papers related optoelectronic materials and functional crystals, which are mostly about the growth, properties, and uses of the different crystals being studied in each paper. The text is recommended for scientists and engineers who would like to know more about the field of materials science, especially those who would like to be involved in materials research.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Science and Engineering of 1- and O-dimensional semiconductors held at the University of Cadiz from 29th March to 1st April 1989, under the auspices of the NATO International Scientific Exchange Program. There is a wealth of scientific activity on the properties of two-dimensional semiconductors arising largely from the ease with which such structures can now be grown by precision epitaxy techniques or created by inversion at the silicon-silicon dioxide interface. Only recently, however, has there burgeoned an interest in the properties of structures in which carriers are further confined with only one or, in the extreme, zero degrees of freedom. This workshop was one of the first meetings to concentrate almost exclusively on this subject: that the attendance of some forty researchers only represented the community of researchers in the field testifies to its rapid expansion, which has arisen from the increasing availability of technologies for fabricating structures with small enough (sub - O. I/tm) dimensions. Part I of this volume is a short section on important topics in nanofabrication. It should not be assumed from the brevity of this section that there is little new to be said on this issue: rather that to have done justice to it would have diverted attention from the main purpose of the meeting which was to highlight experimental and theoretical research on the structures themselves.
