Who can explain the mysteries of the sea? Who can say where reality ends and fantasy begins? In "Invisible Horizons," newspaperman Vincent Gaddis, who specializes in exploring the borderland where fact emerges from myth and legend, has relied upon personal interviews, previously classified documents, and official sources such as the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office to try and solve many of the oustanding puzzles that have plagued seafaring men for millennia. Gaddis refuses to ignore what man does not understand. He is brave enough to say aloud what might have happened in the following situations:-The stories of sea monsters-The eerie tales of ghost ships and phantom crews-The specters that led foundering craft to safety - or destructionGaddis, a native of Ohio, has written numerous articles for national magazines, and is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians."In this factual, documented collection of astounding incidents, fact again proves stranger than fiction. In this volume, the reader will find a treasury of thought-provoking material in the realm of what Rod Serling calls "The Twilight Zone." -The St. Paul Pioneer

In the last hundred years, modern physics and cosmology have shown that there exist regions of the universe forever beyond our reach, hidden by truly ultimate horizons. Such regions exist in those remote parts of the universe where, from our point of view, space expands faster than the speed of light. They are found in black holes, where the gravity is strong enough to retain even light within its field of attraction. And in the realm of the very small, quarks must remain forever confined to their world of extreme density and can never be removed from it. The aim of this book is to describe these ultimate horizons, how they were discovered, how they shape our view of the world, and what clues we have about a world beyond them.

Truth is stranger than fiction, it is said. If so then Distant Horizons presents some of the strangest sea mysteries of all time. For it is not the product of uncritically passing along tales of the sea. It is the result of decades of research. The stories in this compendium are true, often presented with meticulous detail. Sometimes this explodes myth. Sometimes the facts reveal myth to be anemic by comparison. Famous ghost ships like the Mary Celeste and the Carroll A. Deering have become literary formula and economic rehash. But what are the actual facts? Thousands of derelicts once peppered the North Atlantic, but these two mystery ships have stood the test of time. What is really so unique about them? The Bermuda Triangle has earned its infamous reputation, but is it really to blame for some of its most famous victims? Did the Marine Sulphur Queen truly even vanish in the Triangle? What about the USS Cyclops? Could it truly be the American version of the HMS Bounty?

New Critical Theory surveys contemporary leftist thought while introducing the tenets of this new form of critical theory. Beginning with an exploration of the relationship between Marxism, Habermas, and the politics of identity, William S. Wilkerson and Jeffrey R. Paris present a collection that critiques the globalization of capital. The development of personality appears as subject to socialized standards in an age of global capitalism. Only after scrutinizing the effects of such a system can liberation be found. The essays within join Critical Theory with postmodern insights on language and subjectivity to provide a more comprehensive view of emancipatory social theory. Through this and other refelctions on critical race, gender, and queer theories, Wilkerson and Paris emerge with an encompassing volume defining New Critical Theory.

Longing tells the story of the greatest artistic couple in history, Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck. They met when she was eight years old and he was seventeen, drawn together first by music and then by their passion for each other. Drawing on their letters and remarkably frank journals, J. D. Landis writes of Clara and Robert’s enforced separations, their marriage, their artistic triumphs and failures, and finally their shared devotion to, and love for, a young genius who both came between them and brought them together for the last time. Longing was a New York Times Notable Book. It was also named by The Guardian (London) as the second finest novel about music (the first being Thomas Bernhard’s Loser, a judgment with which Mr. Landis is delighted to concur).

On 26 December 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with a relief lighthouseman and fresh provisions. The lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but it had been noted that no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for several days. The relief keeper, Joseph Moore, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the island failed to reveal any sign of what had happened to the three keepers. The last entry in the logbook had been made on 15 December and contained a number of strange and distressing clues as to the mental states of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become ‘very quiet’. When it was revealed that the men’s oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, theories surrounding the keepers’ fates inevitably proliferated. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder or suicide. Others favoured more esoteric explanations – Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. In The Lighthouse, Keith McCloskey explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion.
