Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,3, Hamburg School of Business Administration gGmbH (Maritime School), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences and similarities among shipping firms in the German and the Greek maritime clusters. In this context, market, financial, organizational, human resources and management related issues are identified and discussed. The two major European players in the global shipping market, namely the German and the Greek shipping firms, are currently facing several enormous challenges. The impact of global economic downturn, the crisis in the main shipping sectors and the changes in the pattern of world trade all profoundly affect the maritime transport industry (De Monie, Rodrigue und Notteboom 2011). However the Greek shipping companies seem to manage their businesses in the crisis more successfully than their German competitors. Therefore a report on the differences and similarities among shipping firms in the German and the Greek maritime clusters is of high interest. Even though both players focus on different segments in the maritime markets, that have different rules and conditions, the main parameters and aspects of their businesses will be compared. The focus of this report lies on market, financial, organizational, management and human resources related issues. Since these issues mainly touch strategic management decisions, this report will not go to deeply into the operational aspects of the businesses such as using Key Performance Indicators (KPI ́s) or other methods and applications that would serve these types of issues. The use of KPI ́s would also demand the same source of their collection to have an objective analysis, but since both players operate on different markets, only a small proportion of their KPI ́s would be comparable. Furthermore this paper will focus purely on companies that operate ships. Hence, ports, hinterland-logistics, education- or administration-facilities belonging to the maritime cluster will not be taken into account. After the German and Greek shipping firms have been compared, the report will highlight aspects that differentiate the particular maritime clusters and conclude with similar short prospects both players likely will face in the future.

There were not many textbooks on shipping available for the students in the early 1990s. Therefore it was decided to write Shipping in 1996. One year earlier, Niko Wijnolst had published Design Innovation in Shipping, based on work at the Delft University of Technology. The two books together offered a comprehensive insight and overview into the dynamics of global shipping and maritime innovation. Although the core of the books held its value, it was decided to make an update of the two books and merge them into one new textbook, Shipping Innovation, destined for a broad specter of maritime students and professionals. Some substantial new parts were added, as well as some new contributions by other writers. This textbook offers a one-stop-shopping experience to those students and professionals who wish to get acquainted with the multifaceted aspects of global shipping and its everlasting innovation dynamics. Some of the new contributions are the mission-based design process of a Panamax containership and a ro-ro vessel; sustainable shipping and innovation; and an innovation case-study on the revolutionary design of a ballast-free ship.

The Routledge Handbook of Maritime Trade around Europe 1300-1600 explores the links between maritime trading networks around Europe, from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic to the North and Baltic Seas. Maritime trade routes connected diverse geographical and cultural spheres, contributing to a more integrated Europe in both cultural and material terms. This volume explores networks’ economic functions alongside their intercultural exchanges, contacts and practical arrangements in ports on the European coasts. The collection takes as its central question how shippers and merchants were able to connect regional and interregional trade circuits around and beyond Europe in the late medieval period. It is divided into four parts, with chapters in Part I looking across broad themes such as ships and sailing routes, maritime law, financial linkages and linguistic exchanges. In the following parts - divided into the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic and North Seas - contributors present case studies addressing themes including conflict resolution, relations between different types of main ports and their hinterland, the local institutional arrangements supporting maritime trade, and the advantages and challenges of locations around the continent. The volume concludes with a summary that points to the extraterritorial character of trading systems during this fascinating period of expansion. Drawing together an international team of contributors, The Routledge Handbook of Maritime Trade around Europe is a vital contribution to the study of maritime history and the history of trade. It is essential reading for students and scholars in these fields.

Changes in the dynamics of economic activities since the last decades of the 20th century have yielded major changes in the composition of industries and the division of labor and production across different regions of the world. Despite these shifts in the global economy, some industries have remained competitive even without relocating their operations overseas. Industries and Global Competition examines how and why the specificities of certain industries and firms determined their choice of location and competitiveness. This volume identifies the major drivers of this process and explains why some firms and industries moved to other parts of world while others did not. Relocation was not the sole determinant of the success or failure of firms and industries. Indeed some were able to reinvent themselves at their original location and build new competitive advantages. The path that each industry or firm took varied. This book argues that the specific characteristics of each industry defined the conditions of competitiveness and provide a wide range of cases as illustrations. Aimed at scholars, researchers and acadmeics in the fields of business history, international business and related disciplines Industries and Global Competition exmaines the unique questions; How and why did the specificities of certain industries and firms determine their choice of location and competitiveness? This book analyses several aspects on the efficient resource allocation in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis. The main focus of the volume is on recent European Union (EU) experience highlighting the interrelation between inherent structural rigidities and practical limitations in the conduct of sound economic policy. Special reference is made to Greece (evidencing unprecedented experience), the EU periphery countries and the US. This book will be of interest to academic and central bank researchers, business practitioners (in consultancy and finance) and graduate students, as it is a good example of how scholarly dialogue can contribute to contemporary high-quality policy debate on sound liquidity provision and financial stability in the Eurozone, as well as the effective ways to combat recession in the EU periphery countries.
