The International Book of Erectile Dysfunction is a general textbook on erectile dysfunction written by leading world experts in the field. Basic and clinical research into the anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of erectile function has made it possible to define specific organic disorders and diseases that can result in erectile dysfunction. Now, urologists and other clinicians in this field are able to differentiate between psychogenic and organic causes. The text is well-illustrated, complete with excellent graphics and schemes and will therefore be of use to all medical specialties that cover the male population. It will equally be appreciated by residents, fellows, urologists, reconstructive surgeons, internal doctors and endocrinologists. Each chapter is concise and clear. In addition, general considerations about erectile dysfunction, its etiology, pathophysiology and classifications are discussed. Important facts about its management (conservative or surgical), a variety of surgical procedures, detailed descriptions of different techniques, and possible tricks and traps are noted. Chapters on practical procedures and operative surgical techniques with illustrations are included to provide a detailed and easy reference to the commonly used forms of techniques and procedures. The International Book of Erectile Dysfunction brings together experts of basic science and the clinical management of different types of erectile dysfunction. The chapters cover current diagnostic procedures and treatment options, as well as discuss the current research, that is ongoing in the different areas of erectile dysfunction management.

Erectile dysfunction can affect all age groups. Numerous physical and emotional risk factors may contribute to the problem. These risk factors can range from chronic diseases and medications to psychological factors. In the U.S. alone, it has been estimated that 18 to 30 million men suffer from erectile dysfunction. This number has increased significantly as awareness of the disorder has heightened. Researchers and health care professionals now have a better understanding of what causes erectile dysfunction and the effective medications and non-medication treatments used to treat the condition. Comprehensive and state-of-the-art, Contemporary Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction: A Clinical Guide synthesizes the literature and covers all aspects of treating erectile dysfunction and other related male sexual dysfunctions. This invaluable title offers all physicians, residents, and fellows -- and even medical students and other health professionals such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants – an essential reference for enhancing diagnosis and treatment of this debilitating disorder.

The basic principles of the phenomenon "erection" have been known since the pioneering work of Kolliker, Eckhard and Langley in the nineteenth century. Nonetheless, under the influence of Freud, erectile dysfunction was predominantly at tributed to psychogenic factors. A more liberal perception of sexuality since the 1960s, the development of new and refined diagnostic techniques, and the expansion of basic research activity resulted in a new concept of erectile dysfunction, identifying arteriogenic, venogenic, endocrinologic or myopathic (cavernous smooth muscle dysfunction) factors. From this research other considerations such as autonomic innervation, cavernous endo thelial intactness or impaired neurotransmitter pool are being introduced into routine clinical assessment. A reevaluation of psychogenic etiology with a consequential new concept of psy chogenic impotence is on the rise. In this book the new concepts of basic knowledge on cavernous smooth muscle function and its supraspinal, spinal, and local control; the new diagnostic approaches in psychogenic and autonomic factors; and the new developments of reconstructive therapeutic options for the patient have been tied together. Outstanding and internationally renowned experts in the field of erectile dysfunction have given detailed insight into the latest basic and clinical developments. Well-established diagnostic and thera peutic techniques are presented by experienced colleagues. We hope that this book will help the reader to get an overview of the current concepts of erection. Furthermore, we hope that international collaboration in basic and clinical research in the field of erectile dysfunction will render an update necessary in the near future.
