Johnson, this Institute brought together an interracial group of scholars, social, civic, and religious leaders, activists, and others to battle for civil rights. Scholarship and dialogue were the primary methods of protest and activism. «Intelligent and Effective Direction» bridges what we know about the efforts of those moving away from a Jim Crow segregated South with the efforts of those moving toward the famed civil rights movement.

Bernard Lonergan's economic writings span forty years and contain ideas that differ radically from those of his contemporaries. His theory of macroeconomic dynamics was developed through the 1930s and 1940s, culminating in the composition of For a New Political Economy (1942) and An Essay in Circulation Analysis (1944). This book is based on the workshop that kickstarted the NATO Science Committee Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology. We invited the leaders in the field to attend this inaugural meeting and were delighted by the quality of the attendance, the papers delivered at the workshop and this book. Many of the authors have subsequently run other meetings funded by the Special Programme and have, or are in the process of, editing books which focus on particular topics. This book covers all the major themes in the area ranging from fundamental theoretical work to empirical studies of state of the art technological innovations. The multifaceted story of the UNCF. This book tells the story of the organization's efforts on behalf of black colleges against the backdrop of the cold war and the civil rights movement. Founded during the post–World War II period as a successor to white philanthropic efforts, the UNCF nevertheless retained vestiges of outside control. In its early years, the organization was restrained in its critique of segregation and reluctant to lodge a challenge against institutional and cultural racism. Through cogent analysis of written and oral histories, archival documents, and the group's outreach and advertising campaigns, historian Marybeth Gasman examines the UNCF’s struggle to create an identity apart from white benefactors and to evolve into a vehicle for black empowerment. The first history of the UNCF, Envisioning Black Colleges draws attention to the significance of black colleges in higher education and the role they played in Americans’ struggle for equality.
