Instrumental Thin-Layer Chromatography, Second Edition offers a comprehensive source of authoritative information on all aspects of instrumental thin-layer chromatography. The use of short, topic-focused chapters facilitates identifying information of immediate interest for familiar or emerging uses of thin-layer chromatography. The book gives those working in both academia and industry the opportunity to learn, refresh, or deepen their understanding of fundamental and instrumental aspects of thin-layer chromatography, as well as the tools to interpret and manage chromatographic data. The book serves as a practical consolidated guide to the selection of separation conditions and the use of auxiliary techniques. This fully updated new edition restores the contemporary character of the book for those involved in advancing the technology, analyzing data produced, or applying the technique to new application areas. Some chapters have been consolidated to make room for topics not covered in the first edition, reflecting general changes in the field of thin-layer chromatography, especially in effects-directed detection, convenient interfaces for advanced spectroscopic detection, and greater automation possibilities. This book is a valuable reference for anyone who needs to acquire fundamental and practical information to facilitate progress in research and management functions utilizing information acquired by thin-layer chromatography. Features individual chapters written by recognized authoritative and visionary experts in the field Provides an overview and focused treatment of a single topic Provides tables and diagrams with commonly used data to facilitate practical work, comparison of results, and decision-making Places modern developments in the research literature into a general context not always apparent to inexperienced users of the technique Offers comprehensive updates to all chapters Includes new chapters on instrument platforms, effects-directed detection, data analysis tools, small-scale and microfluidic planar separation systems, and applications to the separation of amino acids and peptides, the analysis of saccharides and lipids, and forensic analysis

Instrumental techniques of analysis have now moved from the confines of the chemistry laboratory to form an indispensable part of the analytical armoury of many workers involved in the biological sciences. It is now quite out of the question to considcr a laboratory dealing with the analysis of biological materials that is not equipped with an extensive range of instrumentation. Recent years have also seen a dramatic improvement in the ease with which such instruments can be used, and the quality and quantity of the analytical data that they can produce. This is due in no sm all part to the ubiquitous use of microprocessors and computers for instrumental control. However, under these circumstances there is areal danger of the analyst adopting a 'black box' mentality and not treating the analytical data produced in accordance with the limitations that may be inherent in the method used. Such a problem can only be overcome if the operator is fully aware of both the theoretical and instrumental constraints relevant to the technique in question. As the complexity and sheer volume of material in undergraduate courses increases, there is a tendency to reduce the amount of fundamental material that is taught prior to embarking on the more applied aspects. This is nowhere more apparent than in the teaching of instrumental techniques of analysis.

In recent years, the field of Toxinology has expanded substantially. On the one hand it studies venomous animals, plants and micro organisms in detail to understand their mode of action on targets. While on the other, it explores the biochemical composition, genomics and proteomics of toxins and venoms to understand their three interaction with life forms (especially humans), development of antidotes and exploring their pharmacological potential. Therefore, Toxinology has deep linkages with biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy and pharmacology. In addition, there is a fast developing applied subfield, clinical toxinology, which deals with understanding and managing medical effects of toxins on human body. Given the huge impact of toxin-based deaths globally, and the potential of venom in generation of drugs for so-far incurable diseases (for example, Diabetes, Chronic Pain), the continued research and growth of the field is imminent. This has led to the growth of research in the area and the consequent scholarly output by way of publications in journals and books. Despite this ever growing body of literature within biomedical sciences, there is still no all-inclusive reference work available that collects all of the important biochemical, biomedical and clinical insights relating to Toxinology. The Handbook of Toxinology aims to address this gap and cover the field of Toxinology comprehensively.

This book deals with chromatographic and electrophoretic methods applied for the separation (quantitation and identification) of biologically relevant compounds. It is assumed that the potential reader is familiar with the basics of chromatographic and electromigration methods. Individual separation modes are dealt with to an extent which follows their applicability for biomedical purposes: liquid chromatography and electromigration methods are therefore highlighted. Each chapter is completed with a list of recent literature covering the 1987-1997 period, which can be used for further guidance of the reader in his/her own field. The chapters have been written by specialists in a particular area and with an emphasis on applications to the biomedical field. This implies that theoretical and instrumental aspects are kept to a minimum which allows the reader to understand the text. Considerable attention is paid to method selection, detection and derivatization procedures and troubleshooting. The majority of examples given represent the analyses of typical naturally-occurring mixtures. Adequate attention is paid to the role of the biological matrix and sample pretreatment, and special attention is given to forensic, toxicological and clinical applications. The book is completed with an extensive Index of Compounds Separated.
