DOWNLOAD EBOOKRight ventricular (RV) function has proven to be a prognostic factor in heart failure with reduced and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction or in pulmonary arterial hypertension. RV function is also a cornerstone in managing relatively novel clinical issues, such as mechanical circulatory support devices or grown-up congenital heart diseases. Despite the notable amount of circumferentially oriented myofibers in the subepicardial layer of the RV myocardium, the non-longitudinal motion directions are often neglected in the everyday assessment of RV function. The complex RV contraction pattern, however, incorporates distinct mechanical components. 3D imaging may enable capturing subtle RV dysfunction, which can be undetectable by conventional methods. Novel 3D-based parameters may allow an earlier diagnosis and better risk stratification of numerous cardiac and primarily non-cardiac diseases.
