The Japanese distinguish between Earthenware, which corresponds to the English classification, and porcelain. Intermediate between these two is the modern manufacture (confined to one or two firms) of what is called in Japan Hard Earthenware, a generic term corresponding to faience or semi-porcelain but commercially applied t0'an Ironstone China.
