This book constitutes the proceedings of the 2000 Howard conference on “Infinite Dimensional Lie Groups in Geometry and Representation Theory”. It presents some important recent developments in this area. It opens with a topological characterization of regular groups, treats among other topics the integrability problem of various infinite dimensional Lie algebras, presents substantial contributions to important subjects in modern geometry, and concludes with interesting applications to representation theory. The book should be a new source of inspiration for advanced graduate students and established researchers in the field of geometry and its applications to mathematical physics.

This volume records most of the talks given at the Conference on Infinite-dimensional Groups held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley, California, May 10-May 15, 1984, as a part of the special program on Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The purpose of the conference was to review recent developments of the theory of infinite-dimensional groups and its applications. The present collection concentrates on three very active, interrelated directions of the field: general Kac-Moody groups, gauge groups (especially loop groups) and diffeomorphism groups. I would like to express my thanks to the MSRI for sponsoring the meeting, to Ms. Faye Yeager for excellent typing, to the authors for their manuscripts, and to Springer-Verlag for publishing this volume. These proceedings are from the Tenth International Conference on Representations of Algebras and Related Topics (ICRA X) held at The Fields Institute. In addition to the traditional ``instructional'' workshop preceding the conference, there were also workshops on ``Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory'', ``Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory'', and ``Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras''. These workshops reflect the latest developments and the increasing interest in areas that are closely related to the representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras. Although these workshops were organized separately, their topics are strongly interrelated. The workshop on Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory surveyed various recently established connections, such as those pertaining to the classification of vector bundles or Cohen-Macaulay modules over Noetherian rings, coherent sheaves on curves, or ideals in Weyl algebras. In addition, methods from algebraic geometry or commutative algebra relating to quiver representations and varieties of modules were presented. The workshop on Finite Dimensional Algebras, Algebraic Groups and Lie Theory surveyed developments in finite dimensional algebras and infinite dimensional Lie theory, especially as the two areas interact and may have future interactions. The workshop on Quantum Groups and Hall Algebras dealt with the different approaches of using the representation theory of quivers (and species) in order to construct quantum groups, working either over finite fields or over the complex numbers. In particular, these proceedings contain a quite detailed outline of the use of perverse sheaves in order to obtain canonical bases. The book is recommended for graduate students and researchers in algebra and geometry.

The University of Virginia (Charlottesville) hosted an international conference on Infinite-dimensional Aspects of Representation Theory and Applications. This volume contains papers resulting from the mini-courses and talks given at the meeting. Beyond the techniques and ideas related to representation theory, the book demonstrates connections to number theory, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics. The specific topics covered include Hecke algebras, quantum groups, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, quivers, modular representations, and Gromov-Witten invariants. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in representation theory.

Lie superalgebras are a natural generalization of Lie algebras, having applications in geometry, number theory, gauge field theory, and string theory. Introduction to Finite and Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras and Superalgebras introduces the theory of Lie superalgebras, their algebras, and their representations. The material covered ranges from basic definitions of Lie groups to the classification of finite-dimensional representations of semi-simple Lie algebras. While discussing all classes of finite and infinite dimensional Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras in terms of their different classes of root systems, the book focuses on Kac-Moody algebras. With numerous exercises and worked examples, it is ideal for graduate courses on Lie groups and Lie algebras. - Discusses the fundamental structure and all root relationships of Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras and their finite and infinite dimensional representation theory - Closely describes BKM Lie superalgebras, their different classes of imaginary root systems, their complete classifications, root-supermultiplicities, and related combinatorial identities - Includes numerous tables of the properties of individual Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras - Focuses on Kac-Moody algebras

This collection of invited expository articles focuses on recent developments and trends in infinite-dimensional Lie theory, which has become one of the core areas of modern mathematics. The book is divided into three parts: infinite-dimensional Lie (super- )algebras, geometry of infinite-dimensional Lie (transformation) groups, and representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Part (A) is mainly concerned with the structure and representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and contains articles on the structure of direct-limit Lie algebras, extended affine Lie algebras and loop algebras, as well as representations of loop algebras and Kac-Moody superalgebras. The articles in Part (B) examine connections between infinite-dimensional Lie theory and geometry. The topics range from infinite-dimensional groups acting on fiber bundles, corresponding characteristic classes and gerbes, to Jordan-theoretic geometries and new results on direct-limit groups. The analytic representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups is still very much underdeveloped. The articles in Part (C) develop new, promising methods based on heat kernels, multiplicity freeness, Banach-Lie-Poisson spaces, and infinite-dimensional generalizations of reductive Lie groups.
