Infectious Diseases Emergencies is a compact reference that summarizes the key topics of those infectious disease processes that are most commonly seen in practice. The opening section reviews principles of management and general management of severe infection in acute and emergency environments. The following sections provide a "head-to-toe" synopsis of common infections presenting in both outpatient and acute care settings. The concluding sections discuss vector borne infections, infections in special populations, and bioterrorism. Concisely written and consistently organized chapters outline the most useful elements of diagnosis and treatment for easy memorization and clarity.

Now available in a compact 4" x 7" format, this portable reference covers the management of emergency conditions seen in pediatric patients. The Fourth Edition includes new sections on pediatric emergency radiology and sports injuries, plus expanded material on infectious diseases and environmental emergencies.. . Diagnosis and management of infectious disease are among the most common and challenging aspects of emergency practice. Ranging from surgical treatment of a minor skin abscess to recognition of a rare tropical disease in a returning traveler to rapid resuscitation of a patient in septic shock, these problems will be familiar to every practicing acute care provider. Written by both infectious disease experts and practicing emergency physicians, this book is designed specifically for the acute care provider. It covers the most important pathogens and the most common clinical syndromes, organized by system and by special patient populations. The book features a comprehensive narrative, as well as high-yield tables covering key points on diagnosis and treatment. High quality color photographs assist with visual diagnosis. This book provides an invaluable resource for every practicing clinician who confronts the spectrum of infectious disease in the acute care setting.
From the Preface: The most significant aspect of infectious diseases is that a majority of serious emergencies are curable if diagnosed early and managed appropriately rather than just treatable, contrary to most other emergent disease processes. Unfortunately, serious infectious disease manifestations are often not seen by patients, families, and health care providers in the same light as other emergencies. Delay in seeking medical attention and recognizing the urgency for intervention often result in a worse prognosis. Like other medical emergencies, the initial encounter for infectious disease emergencies is in the emergency department or outpatient setting. Noninfectious disease physicians, particularly general internists, are often the front-line providers for diagnostic workup and initial management. The reader should keep that in mind, as the first article in this issue has been compiled by 5 of my general internal medicine colleagues. Each section starts with a case vignette and is followed by articulation of questions about diagnosis and management at the very outset. They have very skillfully abstracted a few clinical pearls for each of the serious clinical presentations in their respective sections. The next 10 articles review in detail epidemiology, microbiology, clinical presentations, diagnostic workup, and management, including presumptive and definitive antimicrobial therapy for infectious disease emergencies involving various organ systems. They include articles on the role of molecular diagnosis and pharmacotherapy of infectious disease emergencies.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of highly infectious diseases (HIDs) in the ICU. The text is designed to help critical care specialists and other healthcare practitioners prepare and plan for potential outbreaks of emerging or resurgent HIDs, lead a team in the ICU, perform emergency triage, and provide care for patients with a HID. The book also reviews some of the most prevalent highly infectious diseases, including influenza, SARS, plague, anthrax, and malaria. Written by experts in the field, Highly Infectious Diseases in Critical Care: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide is a valuable resource for critical care and infectious disease specialists who treat patients afflicted with a highly infectious disease in the ICU.
A Brandon/Hill Medical List first-purchase text, for emergency physicians and students, on common clinical infectious disease issues in the emergency room. Covers principles of infectious disease, diagnosis, and treatment.
