The POW Camp at Fort McClellan, Alabama, was one of hundreds of American containment centers built to hold the hundreds of thousands of German prisoners captured during World War II. The camp's well-maintained and humane facilities gained it a reputation as a "model camp." Military officials praised its elimination of major operational problems. International inspectors commended it, calling it one of the best camps in the country. Prisoners accepted and even enjoyed their time there. Drawing on official documents and recollections of prisoners, soldiers and civilians, this book provides a personal and detailed history of a widely praised and admired place of internment.

Of Time and Spirit is a tribute to my father, James Roswell Dorsey Sr. (1919–2000). His story is told from my perspective as a son and traces his journey to inner peace and the struggles of a father and his son to communicate. Further, it is a historical chronology compiled from my dad’s personal papers, military records, civilian personnel records, notes jotted down on scripts of paper, and the many conversations we’ve had over my lifetime. Especially those conversations we had toward the end of his life when I had become a man and could understand some of his innermost feelings, thoughts, and wisdom. This is a project he wanted to undertake prior to his death; however, age and poor health prevented his version of his life. My account of his life is a small fraction of the man he truly was, but he wanted his life recorded in history, and now it is. My father remains in this book, Of Time and Spirit.

In 2011, by chance I discovered the after-action reports of the 329th Infantry Regiment, my fathers World War II unit, on the Internet. An idea was born: use these to reconstruct my fathers path in Europe. I would take my three children, Richard, Mary, and Stephen, on a trip to retrace those footsteps. This book is about our travels, but it is much more. It documents the life of a man and his family, the history of a unit, and how, through research and luck, we were able piece together the story. As far as possible, I tell the tale of my fathers life with pictures and artifacts from that life. In parallel, I relate the history of the unit he joined in combat, inserting pictures where I can. In fitting all the records together with the trip itself, I discovered my father in new ways and built a memory for my children. In an appendix, I give you a guide as to how you can do this for your veterans as well.
