Excerpt from Indian Names in New-York: With a Selection From Other States, and Some Onondaga Names of Plants, Etc There are more Indian names of places in use in New York than is commonly supposed, though many are of little importance, and some are much changed from their original sound. This causes a difficulty in obtaining their true meanings when once forgotten. They are referable to the two great Indian families, the Iroquois and Algonquin, the former mainly prevailing from Albany westward, and the latter being principally confined to the Hudson river valley and the shores of Lake Champlain, though some will be found along the St. Lawrence and the Susquehanna. Near the former river and in the Adirondacks, they are mostly of recent introduction through Algonquin hunters and guides. In a general way the latter class may be recognized by the use of m, b, p, and sometimes by terminations like ick, ing, uck, an, etc. Some names have been introduced, as Alabama, Osceola, Wyoming, and others, but these are few. There is a great deal of information on the native peoples of the United States, which exists largely in national publications. Since much of Native American history occurred before statehood, there is a need for information on Native Americans of the region to fully understand the history and culture of the native peoples that occupied Rhode Island and the surrounding areas. The first section is contains an overview of early history of the state and region. The second section contains an A to Z dictionary of tribal articles and biographies of noteworthy Native Americans that have contributed to the history of Rhode Island. The third section contains several selections from the classic book, A Century of Dishonor, which details the history of broken promises made to the tribes throughout the country during the early history of America. The fourth section offers the publishers opinion on the government dealings with the Native Americans, in addition to a summation of government tactics that were used to achieve the suppression of the Native Americans.

"Edited by Bela B. Edwards and others, this was one of the most important periodicals devoted to education. Although interested primarily in the education of candidates for the ministry and mission fields, it also touched on more general topics in the education field. Contents included statistical material, such as listings of churches and ministers, activities of the American (later Congregational) Education Society, much biography, histories of universities, and essays and discussions pertaining to the ministry and to education" --Cf. American Periodicals, 1740-1900
