Excerpt from Memoirs of Theodore Thomas In writing the following chronicle of the life and art work of my husband, Theodore Thomas, I have endeavored to confine my own part of the narrative to a simple relation of the sequence of events in his career, and to occasional touches such as might reveal something of the deeper and more intimate side of his nature which was known only to those who shared his home. In describing his achievements I have used, as far as possible, the words of others - chiefly of eminent professional critics or musicians, who personally attended the great musical events under his leadership and wrote the articles I have quoted, while the impression created by them was still fresh and vivid in their minds. Mr. Thomas never conducted a concert in Europe, or sought to advertise himself or his work there in any way. Nevertheless, he was regarded by the foremost European musicians as their peer, and his letter files contain personal expressions of gratitude and honor from the contemporary composers and executant artists of every land in which the art of music holds an honored place. Correspondence, mainly incoming, of Theodore Thomas and Rose Fay Thomas, photographs of musicians, and guestbook kept by Rose Fay Thomas. Most of the letters from well-known music and arts figures (many in German) relate to Thomas' tenure at the CSO; there are also drafts of Thomas' own letters, and some addressed after his death to Rose Fay Thomas. Among the many prominent correspondents are Amy Beach, Daniel Burnham, John A. Carpenter, Edward Elgar, Robert Frost, Lilli Lehmann, I.J. Paderewski, and Piotr Tschaikowsky, and Richard Wagner. Also cabinet photographs of twenty-eight composers, musicians, and performers including Brahms, Liszt, Paderewski, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Edward Elgar, and Fannie Bloomfield Zeisler. Begun in 1904, the guestbook is signed by visiting musicians, and other prominent individuals, and often includes musical notation, correspondence, and images of signers.
