Excerpt from In the Kaiser's Capital Had I been but content within mine own land to remain, Those pangs I ne'er had felt that fill an exile's heart with pain. Had not the courage to respond to duty's call been given, Such honours ne'er had come that make mine exile seem like heaven. Excerpt from Mugging the Kaiser and His Pals: War! Why Not? To Safeguard American Capital, Industry, and the Right to Labor But, ascending from this-yawning hollow, shining above the horizon of this universal pestilence, there looms up the energetic, inextinguishable light of Democracy that radiates the path of moral rectitude, informing us that we can firmly and confidently proclaim that the breath of that divinely planted aspiration - the passion for freedom - will prove to be mightier than all the brutally, materialistic strength, and all the prodigious armaments which seem to have laid the world low. With the dawning of Democracy, great, stirring human emotions will vitalize every fibre of her glittering fabric, as the souls of men, women, and children are liber ated from the dungeons of warfare's greed in which they have been heartlessly incarcerated by despicable autocracy, shocking their sensibili ties and marbleizing their spiritual faculties. Excerpt from The Soul of Paris: Two Months in the French Capital During the War of 1914 Nevertheless, and in spite of the odds against me, like a true Optimist I stood my ground. I still believed in Emperor William - believed that at least he was a good comedian; that he would see the greatest Opportunity of his life to make a grandstand play. No one among us doubted that the deciding vote - war or peace - rested with Emperor William. I must confess that I alone in that party advanced the idea that he would cast it for the cause. Of humanity. I really believed in the Kaiser, I say believed that at the final critical moment he would come before the world's footlights and say. A Washington Post Notable Book An eye-opening account of how Congress today really works—and how it doesn’t— Act of Congress focuses on two of the major players behind the sweeping financial reform bill enacted in response to the Great Crash of 2008: colorful, wisecracking congressman Barney Frank, and careful, insightful senator Christopher Dodd, both of whom met regularly with Robert G. Kaiser during the eighteen months they worked on the bill. In this compelling narrative, Kaiser shows how staffers play a critical role, drafting the legislation and often making the crucial deals. Kaiser’s rare insider access enabled him to illuminate the often-hidden intricacies of legislative enterprise and shows us the workings of Congress in all of its complexity, a clearer picture than any we have had of how Congress works best—or sometimes doesn’t work at all.

The classic account of the final offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich. The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater, the last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, which devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come. The Last Battle is Cornelius Ryan’s compelling account of this final battle, a story of brutal extremes, of stunning military triumph alongside the stark conditions that the civilians of Berlin experienced in the face of the Allied assault. As always, Ryan delves beneath the military and political forces that were dictating events to explore the more immediate imperatives of survival, where, as the author describes it, “to eat had become more important than to love, to burrow more dignified than to fight, to exist more militarily correct than to win.” The Last Battle is the story of ordinary people, both soldiers and civilians, caught up in the despair, frustration, and terror of defeat. It is history at its best, a masterful illumination of the effects of war on the lives of individuals, and one of the enduring works on World War II.

I am determined, however, that my de scription shall avoid semblance to a catalogue or a guide-book, so in the way of statistics and general foreword I will state only that the present ex tensive, modern, well lighted and arranged concrete buildings of this institution, finished except for the now nearly completed library-confer ence building in 1925, and housing nine miles of exhibits, occupy an island in 'the river Isar, whose green waters, contributing beauty to the beautiful Bavarian capital through which they flow, create - again at the command of Kaiser von Miller - electric power as they pass. There was joy in the streets of the Capital town, There was sorrow and gloom in Berlin, When the final results of the drive were set down And the shekels were all gathered in. There were throngs where the gospel of Freedom was preached, Where the pacifist's cause took a fiop, But the acme of patriotism was reached. When the War Risk went over the top. For the girls of the War Risk are proud of their land, From its uttermost boundaries they come, To aid in the battle and each take a hand, In defence of their country and home. The decision to move Germany's government seat from Bonn to Berlin by the year 2000 poses an epic architectural challenge and has fostered an international debate on which building styles are appropriate to represent German national identity. Capital Dilemma investigates the political decisions and historical events behind the redesign of Berlin's official architecture. It tells a complex and exciting drama of politics, memory, cultural values, and architecture, in which Helmut Kohl, Albert Speer, Sir Norman Foster, and I. M. Pei all figure as players. If capital city design projects are symbols of national identity and historical consciousness, Berlin is the supreme example. In fact, architecture has played a pivotal role throughout Germany's turbulent twentieth-century history. After the fall of the monarchy, Germany gave birth to the Bauhaus, whose founders argued that their own revolutionary designs could shape human destiny. The century's warring ideologies, Nazism and Communism, also used architecture for their own political ends. In its latest incarnation, Berlin will become the capital of the fifth German state in this century to be ruled from that city. How will the official architecture of reunified Berlin, a democratic capital being built amid totalitarian remains, be different this time around? Th e Federal Republic of Germany, a highly stable democracy in stark contrast to its predecessors, has been struggling with burdensome architectural legacies. In the process, it has considered remedies as varied as outright destruction, refurbishment, and, in the case of the former Nazi Central Bank now being converted into the new Foreign Ministry, physical concealment.

Prince Bismarck's greatness as a statesman and his imperishable services to Prussia and Germany are historical facts of such tremendous significance that there is doubtless no man in existence, whatever his party affiliations, who would dare to place them in question. For this very reason alone it is stupid to accuse me of not having recognized the greatness of Prince Bismarck. The opposite is the truth. I revered and idolized him. Nor could it be otherwise. It should be borne in mind with what generation I grew up—the generation of the devotees of Bismarck. He was the creator of the German Empire, the paladin of my grandfather, and all of us considered him the greatest statesman of his day and were proud that he was a German. Bismarck was the idol in my temple, whom I worshiped. But monarchs also are human beings of flesh and blood, hence they, too, are exposed to the influences emanating from the conduct of others; therefore, looking at the matter from a human point of view, one will understand how Prince Bismarck, by his fight against me, himself destroyed, with heavy blows, the idol of which I have spoken. But my reverence for Bismarck, the great statesman, remained unaltered. While I was still Prince of Prussia I often thought to myself: "I hope that the great Chancellor will live for many years yet, since I should be safe if I could govern with him." But my reverence for the great statesman was not such as to make me take upon my own shoulders, when I became Emperor, political plans or actions of the Prince which I considered mistakes. Even the Congress of Berlin in 1878 was, to my way of thinking, a mistake, likewise the "Kulturkampf." Moreover, the constitution of the Empire was drawn up so as to fit in with Bismarck's extraordinary preponderance as a statesman; the big cuirassier boots did not fit every man. Then came the labor-protective legislation. I most deeply deplored the dispute which grew out of this, but, at that time, it was necessary for me to take the road to compromise, which has generally been my road both on domestic and foreign politics. For this reason I could not wage the open warfare against the Social Democrats which the Prince desired. Nevertheless, this quarrel about political measures cannot lessen my admiration for the greatness of Bismarck as a statesman; he remains the creator of the German Empire, and surely no one man need have done more for his country than that. Owing to the fact that the great matter of unifying the Empire was always before my eyes, I did not allow myself to be influenced by the agitations which were the commonplaces of those days. In like manner, the fact that Bismarck was called the majordomo of the Hohenzollerns could not shake my trust in the Prince, although he, perhaps, had thoughts of a political tradition for his family. As evidence of this, he felt unhappy, for instance, that his son Bill felt no interest in politics and wished to pass on his power to Herbert.
