DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn December 2007, the California Postsecondary Education adopted the last in an initial series of reports on the nexus between postsecondary education and workforce development by requesting staff to return with plans and priorities to pursue implementation of ten general policy options, grouped into three categories. One option is already being moved forward: Pursuing the improved state-level collaboration toward which legislation AB 365 (Postsecondary education: Task Force on State Workforce Needs: California Community Colleges Economic and Workforce Development Program) was targeted. Several options may be relatively low on the state's policy "radar screen," but provide opportunities for Commission initiatives. In priority order, these options include: (1) Compiling and disseminating "Best Practices"; (2) Aligning system and campus research and planning; (3) Increasing focus on Career development; and (4) Better articulating the role of postsecondary general education. Finally, about half of the recommended policy options are now being pursued by postsecondary education stakeholders and others in the state; these should be monitored and supported rather than prioritized for immediate Commission action, especially in light of limited resources. These options include: (1) Improving and linking data; (2) Encouraging regional strategies; (3) Improving alignment with K-12 education; (4) Strengthening career technical education; and (5) Securing adequate resources.
