A complete reproduction of the Vintage Cocktail Book "The Ideal Bartender" originally published in 1917. Tom Bullock became to be a well-recognized bartender of the time at St. Louis Country Club, where he served for government officials and other elite members. G.H. Walker, grandfather of George W. Bush was one of the big fans of Bullock's cocktails and wrote the indroduction. After publishing this cocktail book, Prohibition made Bullock's profession illegal, yet bartending culture was stronger than ever, bartenders were well paid and tipped for supplying public a illegal substance of alcohol. Bullock moved frequently and changed professions during the dry period, but kept bartending at St. Louis Country Club where people could still drink. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Before all things the student must have an open mind toward all truth, and an earnest de sire for the very fullness of Divine Life and Knowledge. As long as the mind is shut up to some one religion, or to a part of one, it is useless to talk of the final things. No one is ready for the immortal possessions, and the City of God - the Cosmic Consciousness - whose Religion has not become inclusive of all Religions. This does not mean non-relationship to some special form of faith. Many still remain connected with a religious organization who, at the same time, only regard it as one of the many forms of association that are the offspring of man's de sire for friendly relations with others. Whether belonging to a church or not, the true attitude towards them is one of posses sion. They are for man, not man for them. In this sense, while belonging to none, all belong to you. The final Religion of man must include all the Religions. With this hospitality of mind there must be the turning of the desire of life towards the Spiritual and Divine, as well as to the natural and human. If the ideal of life does not include God as well as man, I shall seem to you only as one who dreams. I have no condemnation for those who are as yet, um desirous of God. God has been so misconceived and misrepresented that the true hunger of God is often a rejection of the idea of God as commonly taught. The Living God has no condemnation for those who cannot find Him. God is hidden and undiscoverable by mind alone, that man may have the strength that comes of searching and finding Him by living up to his own loftiest ideals of Truth and Love. When the seeker is ready, He who seemed to be the unknowable is found and known. Those who have found God are the Awakened. The spiritual world is no longer a state entirely apart and unknown from the natural. Theworld is ou the eve of a great Spiritual awaken ing. Man is waking up to the fact that God is, and that He is knowable, even as man is knowable.
