“Strokes are the third-leading cause of death in America, and for the ‘lucky’ stroke victims who don’t die, about half will spend the rest of their lives trying to recover.” Roughly 700,000 American suffer a stroke each year and around 140,000 of them are fatal. Different Strokes is an in-depth look at what surviving, or not surviving, a stroke can mean. And Steven Boorstein should know—at age fifty-two, he suffered a stroke after a hit on the ski slopes of Vail. Part-memoir, part-how-to, Steven Boorstein’s book will help you to recover from a stroke, whether you were the victim of one or had to watch a loved one suffer. Dividing the book into three distinct sections, Boorstein first focuses on his personal experience with a stroke, how he recovered, and his controversial use of medical marijuana to help resurrect his damaged mind and wracked body. The second part of this book explores how others have dealt with a stroke. Hear first-hand from stroke survivors and their loved ones about what effect a stroke had on their marriage, sex life, careers, relationships (with children, relatives, strangers), and more. The finale of the book covers tools and helpful resources—therapies, therapeutic tools, and exercises; organizations for survivors; and key words—for people who have had a stroke, been diagnosed as being at risk, or for those whose loved ones are at risk or are recovering. This is an essential book for anyone who’s ever had, or been hurt by, a stroke.

No one expects a catastrophic event to befall their family, especially on Christmas Day. One moment, life was normal, and in the next, our family was completely and forever changed when my husband, Mark, suffered four strokes. This book takes you on the rollercoaster journey of stroke recovery, both the physical and emotional aspects. We came through this with our faith in God strengthened thanks to our family, friends, and neighbors who surrounded us in love and prayer. This book is not only a testament to love and faith but also a guide for others who are caring for a critically ill family member. Difficult topics are covered, including grieving a loved one who is still alive and how to thrive as a caregiver (the toughest job in the world). My hope is that if you are on your own difficult journey caring for a disabled or critically ill loved one, you will find inspiration and guidance from my family's story.

The author writes of her six year struggle to find what she describes as "finding the pieces that made up the whole of "me" and bringing them together again." This is a delightful fell good read with humor and the awesome commitment of family. She is still paralyzed but has come so far remembering and writing of the struggle and confusion she lived with, strolling through the tunnel to heaven, living through hell, losing her mind and finding self. The author gives great insight to anyone caring for another as to how and what their patient may be feeling or thinking. There is so much understanding for anyone in their day to day interactions with others after reading t! his book. There is a lot to think about as "Like a Bolt out of the blue, fate comes down and changes you." A feel good, inspirational, motivational read. About the Author Mary Morgan, now 65 years old has been married for 46 years with 5 children and 11 grandchildren. She has lived on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for over 30 years and is a retired Real Estate sales manager. Six years ago she suffered a severe stroke and is paralyzed on her left side. She now spends her time speaking to caregiver and independent living meetings. She says" Heaven tempted me during stroke but sure has a lot of competition to top my life on this planet." Book Reviews "Like A Bolt" has been the supreme piece of literature on the subject that I had yet to read. I have been given a lot of "professional" literature on stroke and help for caregivers, none of them gave me anything I really needed and wanted. In fact, "Like A Bolt" as I see it, is the definitive work on the experience of stroke and in some real sense turned me around....CharlesMcCoy, Va.Beach, Va.
