These laws are but imperfectly understood, and our knowl edge of them is continually progressing. In the present state of medical science a com prehensive study of them is the labor of a life, and should therefore be undertaken only by those Who are able and Willing to devote. Excerpt from Hygiene of Women and Children In this book passing references only have been made to general sanitation - just to point out how general sanitation affects the individual. The next development of the whole subject of Hygiene was along certain special lines - the hygiene of the child at various ages. Thus, the school medical service deals with the child of school age, the infant welfare work started on the infant after birth, and spread backwards to the mother and onwards to the child of school age. As a whole, the subject had arisen and had of necessity been dealt with, as it were, in sections of the community. Again, we have the special arrangements for dealing with tuberculosis and venereal disease, all on communal lines. A community is, however, made up in the aggregate of families, and these of individuals, and it is to the individual and the home that attention has been directed in this book. After all, it is to the individual that we must come in the end for any concerted effort. General public health measures will only carry us a certain way - they must be the first step - but the final step must be by the individual. It has been well said that people can be made neither healthy nor sober by Act of Parliament. Acts of Parliament are, however, essential in dealing with the impediments which prevent individuals from working out their own salvation, but they cannot effect this. Excerpt from Personal Hygiene and Home Nursing: A Practical d104 for Girls and Women for Home and School Use As I look back over years spent in a medical practice confined largely to patients suffering from a moderate degree of chronic invalidism and nutritional disorders, certain facts present them selves in a striking Way. First, that the cause of this depleted health is almost always the result Of a lack of knowledge and consequent failure to conform to natural laws. Second, that whatever measure of success results from the treatment of such cases is due, almost entirely, to the establishment of a scheme of living suited to the individual case. The patient is entered upon a course Of progressive upbuilding, being instructed as to diet, bathing, exercise, rest, and amount and character of work. With careful and explicit instruction and with guidance from week to week, the results in most cases are excellent, the patient gaining In weight and strength. Little or no medicine is required, and it is gratifying to see the interest of the average person in the plan of treatment and his enthusiasm in carrying it out. Excerpt from Community Hygiene One of the most significant and far-reaching movements of the day is the awakening of the health conscience of the community. No matter how alert, well informed, and prudent the individual may be, he is no longer able to protect his own health or that of his family from some of the most serious dangers which threaten it. Even the most wealthy and in uential citizen is utterly powerless to insure the purity of his water-supply, the proper disposal of his sewage and garbage, the purity of the milk his children drink, or the wholesomeness of the food on his table, except by the aid of the strong arm of the law acting through public officers of health. In fact, health has become a community problem. At first sight, the wisdom of giving children in formation about public health may seem open to question. They have no votes; and it will be several years before they are able either to in uence public opinion or vote yes or no on questions of public sanitation. Furthermore, it may be argued that they are likely to have difficulty in understand ing the engineering and chemical problems involved in public sanitary measures. Excerpt from Healthy Living, Vol. 2: Principles of Personal and Community Hygiene Year by year the preservation of health becomes more and more a problem which requires the intelligent cooperation of the individual with the specialist. Physicians rely on personal hygiene or the conduct of the daily life rather than on drugs. Health departments are less interested in restrictive ordinances than in public health education. In order, however, that the teachings of the physician and the health officer may bear fruit, they must take root in a soil which has been thoroughly. Pre pared for their reception. A sound fundamental knowledge of the principles of physiology and hygiene and sanitation thorl oughly diffused through the community is essential to real progress in the future. It is in the schools that the basis must be laid, and this book has been prepared in the hope that it may be of some aid in laying it soundly. In the portion of the book which deals with physiology and personal hygiene, the attempt has been made to eliminate all needless anatomical detail and to dwell on the working of the living machine with its wonderful complexities and correlations. Since the writer approaches the subject from the standpoint of a biologist interested primarily in public health, special stress has been laid on the relation of the living machine to its environ ment, and particularly to its microbic enemies. The marvellous achievements of public health science during the past decade make it important that every boy and girl should know some thing of the problems of municipal sanitation, of the campaigns against infant mortality and tuberculosis, and of the conquest of insect-borne disease on the Isthmus of Panama.
