The more than 140 papers presented here fall into three categories: invited survey papers, synopses of poster presentations and short oral presentations, and reports on special integrated studies. The synopses are grouped according to the Conference programme: 1) Transport and deposition 2) Vegetation and soil 3) Water quality 4) Aquatic biota. Investigations on acid precipitation and its ecological effects are typically of an interdisciplinary nature. We have tried to emphasize this by presenting together papers on research results obtained within integrated, regional programmes.

Readings in the Anthropocene brings together scholars from German Studies and beyond to interpret the German tradition of the last two hundred years from a perspective that is mindful of the challenge posed by the concept of the Anthropocene. This new age of man, unofficially pronounced in 2000, holds that humans are becoming a geological force in shaping the Earth's future. Among the biggest challenges facing our future are climate change, accelerated species loss, and a radical transformation of land use. What are the historical, philosophical, cultural, literary, and artistic responses to this new concept? The essays in this volume bring German culture to bear on what it means to live in the Anthropocene from a historical, ethical, and aesthetic perspective.
Although workplace design and management are gaining more and more attention from modern organizations, workplace research is still very fragmented and spread across multiple disciplines in academia. There are several books on the market related to workplaces, facility management (FM), and corporate real estate management (CREM) disciplines, but few open up a theoretical and practical discussion across multiple theories from different disciplines. Therefore, workplace researchers are not aware of all the angles from which workplace management and effects of workplace design on employees has been or could be studied. A lot of knowledge is lost between disciplines, and sadly, many insights do not reach workplace managers in practice. Therefore, this new book series is started by associate professor Rianne Appel-Meulenbroek (Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands) and postdoc researcher Vitalija Danivska (Aalto University, Finland) as editors, published by Routledge. It is titled ‘Transdisciplinary Workplace Research and Management’ because it bundles important research insights from different disciplinary fields and shows its relevance for both academic workplace research and workplace management in practice. The books will address the complexity of the transdisciplinary angle necessary to solve ongoing workplace-related issues in practice, such as knowledge worker productivity, office use, and more strategic management. In addition, the editors work towards further collaboration and integration of the necessary disciplines for further development of the workplace field in research and in practice. This book series is relevant for workplace experts both in academia and industry. This second book in the series focuses on the role of workplace management in the organization and the tasks that workplace management needs to consider. The 18 theories that are presented in this book and applied to workplace research discuss management aspects from the organization’s perspective or dive deeper into issues related to people and/or building management. They all emphasize that workplace management is a complex matter that requires more strategic attention in order to add value for various stakeholders. The final chapter of the book describes a first step towards integrating the presented theories into an interdisciplinary framework for developing a grand workplace management theory.
APPEAR – »Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development« – wird von der Österreichischen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit finanziert und fördert Kooperationen in den Bereichen Lehre, Forschung und Management zwischen österreichischen Hochschulen und Universitäten, bzw. wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen in insgesamt 13 Partnerländern. APPEAR ist nicht an einseitigem Wissenstransfer interessiert, sondern schafft transdisziplinäre und transnationale Räume des Lernens und gemeinsamen Forschens. Im Rahmen des seit 2009 laufenden Programmes wurden bislang 17 akademische Partnerschaften in lateinamerikanischen und afrikanischen Ländern; bzw. in Nepal realisiert, die in dem Reader vorgestellt werden. Dabei zeigen sich spannende Möglichkeiten partizipativer und transkultureller Wissensproduktion, die insbesondere auch für nachhaltige Entwicklungswege in den betroffenen Ländern von hoher Relevanz ist.
Present in soil and water, humic substances are the most widespread organic compounds, naturally occurring from a physical, chemical, and microbiological transformation of biomolecules. They represent about 25% of the total organic carbon on the Earth and comprise up to 75% of the dissolved organic carbon in water, making them important for multiple environmental processes in both soil and aquatic systems. Despite many decades of extensive study, the formation mechanisms of humic substances are still a subject of discussion and controversy. This book examines the dynamics of humic substances, their physicochemical and biological properties, and methods for their extraction and characterization. The book also sheds light on recent advances and applications of humic substances in agriculture, environment, industry, and medicine.
Based on the Second International Conference of the International Humic Substances Society held in Birmingham, England, in 1984, this compendium reviews ways of studying the structure and function of humic substances, including the use of both degradative and nondegradative processes. Also considers nitrogen in humic substances, humic molecules and the interactions between humic and other substances.
