Excerpt from How Some Wholesale Grocers Build Better Retailers This report sets forth some of the services rendered retailers by successful wholesalers for their mutual benefit. Wholesalers and retailers of groceries recognize that a considerable part of their success depends on each other. The study on which this report is based was made to determine some of the methods which successful wholesalers are using in helping retailers to sell more groceries at lower costs, and to determine the areas and evaluate the need for additional research that will show wholesalers and retailers how they can, by working together, hold down the costs of food distribution. Case studies were made of selected wholesalers, who had annual sales volumes ranging from 5 million to 50 million dollars, and who employed apparently successful methods. The wholesalers studied performed more than the usual number of services for their retailers. Available evidence indicated that the Operating costs of firms offering a number of services to retailers are not necessarily higher, and the costs may be lower, than those of firms which offer few services. The services most frequently performed by wholesalers for their retail customers include the furnishing of informational aids, promotional aids, store-engineering assistance, and store-management guidance. All the wholesalers whose operations were studied furnished informational aids to help the retailer in determining proper pricing of his merchandise and in deciding on improvements desirable for the betterment of the retailer's business. The media used in relaying such information to the retailers were order books, sale-en, supervisors, invoices, and bulletins. Excerpt from Methods of Handling and Delivering Orders Used by Some Leading Wholesale Grocers Among wholesalers who have developed the idea, most direct orders are received by mail - the retailer fills out a printed (commonly called pm-printed) order form and mails it in. A number of wholesalers do a large part of their business in this fashion. For example, one wholesaler issues a weekly price book to his retailers. The cover sheet of this book is an order form. Retailers place their orders by writing in the items wanted, tearing off the order sheet, and mailing it in. However, writing in each item is time consuming for the retailer and also leads to errors because of incomplete or illegible listing of items. Another wholesaler has overcome this disadvantage by issuing price books on which the retailer indicates his order by simply marking the quantity of each item he wants next to its description and then mailing in the entire book. In the latter case all items are described and given a code number. The code number and complete descriptions minimize the possibility of error resulting from faulty or incomplete writing and also permit ready translation to sales orders for office and warehouse processing. Both these wholesalers reported that they received excellent cooperation from retailers in order ing merchandise in these ways. (see examples of pre-printed order forms. Excerpt from Competition and Combination in the Wholesale Grocery Trade in Philadelphia These developments, of course, mean a curtailment of the business passing thru the hands of the Wholesalers. One Of'l these is the growth of the chain store systems. These systems, operating a number Of small retail stores in one community, buy in large quantities from the manufacturers, and operate their own wholesale warehouses. In 1917, there were five such systems operating in Philadelphia, The Acme Tea Company, Childs Grocery Company, Bell and Company, the George M. Dunlap Company, and Robinson and Crawford. In that year, these five companies were merged into one system, the American Stores Company. This combined company has a capital of It operates about six hundred stores in Philadelphia, and about an equal number outside the city. It does a business of about a year, none of which goes thru the hands of the wholesalers. A few months after this merger was announced, another chain system entered the city, The Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. Excerpt from Operating Expenses in the Wholesale Grocery Business in 1921 The reports on the cost of doing business in the wholesale grocery trade in 1921 are particularly significant in that they furnish a, picture of conditions in a year of generally severe business depression, during which problems Of readjustment had to be faced that had not arisen for at least fifteen years prior to this time. For two hundred twenty - nine firms that submitted fully comparable statements for both 1920 and 1921 the aggregate volume of sales Showed a decline of 30 - 4 from in 1920 to in 1921. Gross profit, in percentage of net sales, was greater in 1921 than in the preceding year; in 1920 the common figure for gross profit was lower than in any previous year for which records are available. This indicates that wholesale grocers generally took their inventory losses, occasioned by the heavy drop in prices, at the end of 1920. Despite the higher percentage of gross profit in 1921, the average net loss was greater in that year than in 1920. For all the firms reporting, the average net loss in 1921 was of net sales, as compared to a common figure of in 1920. This increase in net loss, even though gross profit was higher, resulted from the difficulties that were encountered in readjusting expenses to the falling-off in sales and the drop in prices. The common figure for total expense in 1921 was as compared with a common figure of 9% in 1920. Practically every firm showed a higher per centage of expense for 1921 than for the preceding year. The rate of stock-turn was lower in 1921 than in any previous year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
