Reciprocating wear tests were performed to investigate the effects of honing on the wear of ceramic coated piston rings and cylinder liners. The baseline or control cases consisted of testing ceramic coated rings against ceramic coated liner specimens whose surfaces were ground and lapped smooth. A second series of tests were performed with liner specimens with base and plateau honed surfaces. Test conditions were chosen to simulate the temperatures, pressures, and boundary lubricated conditions present at top ring reversal in a conventional diesel engine. Wear factor comparisons between the baseline cases and the tests with the honed liner specimens indicate that honing alone is not sufficient to ensure an improvement in ring and liner wear.

Metrology and Properties of Engineering Surfaces provides in a single volume a comprehensive and authoritative treatment of the crucial topics involved in the metrology and properties of engineering surfaces. The subject matter is a central issue in manufacturing technology, since the quality and reliability of manufactured components depend greatly upon the selection and qualities of the appropriate materials as ascertained through measurement. The book can in broad terms be split into two parts; the first deals with the metrology of engineering surfaces and covers the important issues relating to the measurement and characterization of surfaces in both two and three dimensions. This covers topics such as filtering, power spectral densities, autocorrelation functions and the use of Fractals in topography. A significant proportion is dedicated to the calibration of scanning probe microscopes using the latest techniques. The remainder of the book deals with the properties of engineering surfaces and covers a wide range of topics including hardness (measurement and relevance), surface damage and the machining of brittle surfaces, the characterization of automobile cylinder bores using different techniques including artificial neural networks and the design and use of polymer bearings in microelectromechanical devices. Edited by three practitioners with a wide knowledge of the subject and the community, Metrology and Properties of Engineering Surfaces brings together leading academics and practitioners in a comprehensive and insightful treatment of the subject. The book is an essential reference work both for researchers working and teaching in the technology and for industrial users who need to be aware of current developments of the technology and new areas of application.

The work included in this book pertains to advanced abrasive and nonconventional machining processes. These processes are at the forefront of modern technology, with significant practical significance. Their importance is also made clear by the case studies that are included in the research that is presented in the book, pertaining to important materials and high-end applications. However, the particularities of these manufacturing processes need to be further investigated and the processes themselves need to be optimized. This is conducted in the presented works with significant experimental and modeling work, incorporating modern tools of analysis and measurements.

This two-volume set addresses both current and developing topics of advanced machining technologies and machine tools used in industry. The treatments are aimed at motiving and challenging the reader to explore viable solutions to a variety of questions regarding product design and optimum selection of machining operations for a given task. This two-volume set will be useful to professionals, students, and companies in the areas of mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, materials, and production engineering fields. Traditional Machining Technology covers the technologies, machine tools, and operations of traditional machining processes. These include the general-purpose machine tools used for turning, drilling, and reaming, shaping and planing, milling, grinding and finishing operations. Thread and gear cutting, and broaching processes are included along with semi-automatic, automatic, NC and CNC machine tools, operations, tooling, mechanisms, accessories, jigs and fixtures, and machine tool dynamometry are discussed. Non-Traditional and Advanced Machining Technologies covers the technologies, machine tools, and operations of non-traditional mechanical, chemical and thermal machining processes. Assisted machining technologies, machining of difficult-to-cut materials, design for machining, accuracy and surface integrity of machined parts, environment-friendly machine tools and operations, and hexapods are also presented. The topics covered throughout this volume reflect the rapid and significant advances that have occurred in various areas in machining technologies.
