Excerpt from History of the Standard Weights and Measures of the United States States, conformably to which the coinage thereof Shall be regulated. The troy pound thus adopted had been procured in the year 1827 by Albert Gallatin, minister of the United States at London, and brought to this country by special messenger, who delivered it to the director of the Mint at Philadelphia. The weight was of brass and an exact copy of the imperial troy pound of Great Britain, according to the statement of Captain Kater, who made the comparison between the two standards. The casket and accompanying packages were retained under seal until Mr. Adams, President of the United States, visited Philadelphia and verified the seal of Mr. Gallatin and the other facts in regard to its authenticity. Excerpt from Weights and Measures Standards of the United States: A Brief History Throughout its early history, the United States Government showed extensive interest in uniform weights and measures; several efforts were made to secure international agreements in this field. This in retest has continued through the years and is stronger now than ever before. The history of the original Confederation of States and of the constitutional government of the United States reveals much evidence of the perplexities arising from the diversity of weights and measures among the States and of the desirability of a uniform system. Excerpt from First Conference on the Weights and Measures of the United States: Held at the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. January 16 and 17, 1905 The replies to the above letter brought out the fact that the date proposed allowed too brief an interval for many of the States to make the necessary arrangements to send representatives, and January 16 and 17, 1905, were therefore selected. The material for the second edition of the report of this Conference is practically the same as the original report, with a few slight additions.
