DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from History of the First Presbyterian Church at Plainfield, New Jersey The Village of Plainfield consisted of only sixty scattered buildings then. There was a stream of rather generous propor tions that made its way from the Scotch Plains notch through the watercourse that is now not much more than a trickling rivulet, by comparison, and which we misname Green Brook. But then it broadened out into a pond that served to store up water power for a grist mill now between Watching Avenue and Somerset Street. This site was surrounded almost entirely by a grove of stately chestnut, oak and elm trees, save for a mossy place where the farmers of the country-side brought their grain to be ground into flour.
