But she could find nothing else fit to read to them. There are, indeed, plenty of story-books drawing their materials from history, and professing to be intended for children. But they are not suited to very young children. They abound in words and ideas which a child of four or six years old not only does not understand, but cannot be made to understand. The writer, however, believed that it was quite possible to put portions of Livy and Plutarch into language which should need little or no explanation even to children of that age. She accordingly made the experiment. One story after another was written and read to her little boys. Whenever she discovered that a word or idea was unintelligible to them, she took pains to simplify it. She found that they thoroughly enjoyed these old tales from Roman history, and liked to hear them repeated again and again. It advances somewhat in the manner of a widening series of concentric circles; first a single city among a group of kindred communities in the Latin plain bounded by the Tiber, the Sabine and Volscian hills, and the Tuscan sea; then a united Latin power, with the city of Rome as its head then a power embracing the whole of Italy, and extending its control over the Mediterranean coast-lands; and, finally, a world-empire, including within its citizenship a great variety of races, united in a common allegiance to the Roman Emperor, and enjoying a common civilisation. In the achievement of this result, which was fully attained by the middle of the third century after Christ, the native Romans took other peoples into partnership with them - their near kindred of the Latin stock first of all; then the other races of Italy, Umbrians, Samnites, Etruscans, and Greeks; and then, by a continuous process of enfranchisement, the inhabitants Of their conquered territories beyond Italy, in Spain, Gaul, the Danubian lands, Greece and the Graecised eastern countries, and northern Africa. All these peoples, in the end, called themselves Romans, and shared in the benefits and the burdens of the Roman civilisa tion: thus about the middle of the first century AD we find S. Paul, by descent a Jew, by nativity a Cilician of Tarsus, claiming the liberties and privileges of a Roman citizen as his birthright. Many of the greatest names in the latter parts of the history are those of men who were not Roman by birth.
